Abstract

Apparatus and methods to manage recording of streaming packetized content (such as for example live IP packetized content) for access, retrieval and delivering thereof to one or more users. In one embodiment, the foregoing is accomplished via communication between a recording manager and a receiver/decoder device. The recording manager manages and schedules recording of content on behalf of the receiver/decoder device (and/or mobile devices) disposed at a user's premises. The recording manager runs one or more computer programs designed to receive requests to record packetized content from one or more consumer devices, and use metadata contained within the requests to cause a cloud storage entity or premises storage device to record the content at its scheduled date/time (either via the receiver/decoder device itself, or another network entity). In this manner, the recording manager provides digital video recording (DVR) functionality to devices that would be otherwise incapable of scheduling a recording and/or recording such content.

wherein the storage location comprises a partitioned cloud-based storage location interlocked between the user of the at least one IP enabled device and another user associated with a client device that is within the trusted domain, such that the recorded streaming media cannot be accessed by the another user until the user of the IP enabled device has completed use of the content element.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the messages comprises a request to schedule the streaming media to be recorded at a specified date or time.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one program further enables, when executed, dedication of a common location on the storage element for storage of the recorded streaming media for one or more users associated with the premises.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein only one of the one or more users associated with the premises is allowed access to the recorded streaming media on the commonly designated location at a given time.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one program further enables, when executed, discarding duplicate requests for the recorded streaming media from the one or more users.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one program further enables, when executed:

retrieval of the recorded streaming media from the storage location;

decoding the recorded streaming media; and

transmitting in a decoded format the recorded streaming media to the at least one IP enabled device.

13. A computer-readable apparatus comprising media configured to store at least one computer program thereon, the at least one computer program comprising a plurality of instructions which are configured to, when executed:

receive a request for real-time, Internet Protocol (IP)-packetized video content from a non-IP enabled device associated with an authenticated user of a managed network, the request comprising metadata identifying at least the non-JP enabled device and the requested content;

determine, based at least in part on the metadata, that a subscription level for a user associated to the non-IP enabled device is sufficient to enable the user to view the requested content on a IP-enabled device;

based at least on the determination, store a data element comprising data indicating that the user can view the requested content on the IP-enabled device, the data element configured to be used for only a prescribed number of subsequent requests for viewing the requested content on the IP-enabled device;

send the data element to a network entity of the managed network as part of each of the subsequent requests that originate from the IP-enabled device;
