Abstract

Systems and methods for improving safety of a multi-function portable personal communications device can include determining a first position of the personal communications device, after a predetermined time interval, determining a second position of the personal communications device, determining the distance between the first position and the second position, determining the time interval in which the personal communications device moved from the first position and the second position, calculating an average velocity of the personal communications device based on the first position, the second position and the time interval and, if the average velocity of the personal communication device exceeds a predetermined value, sending an alert or inhibiting a function of the personal communications device. Other systems and methods that improve safety are also disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. A method of inhibiting a function of a portable personal communications device, the method comprising:

determining an average velocity of the portable personal communications device;

determining a first position of the portable personal communication device;

determining when the first position of the portable personal communication device is within a predetermined distance of a target location; and

determining a current date and time;

determining whether the current date and time is within a defined time window;

inhibiting a first function of the personal communication device based on the determination that the first position is within the predetermined distance of the target location and that the current date and time is within the defined time window; and

when the average velocity of the personal communication device exceeds a predetermined value, inhibiting a second function of the portable personal communications device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first function is the same as the second function.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the first function or the second function comprises a texting function.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the first function or the second function comprises a voice communication function.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the target location comprises a location of a school.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the defined time window corresponds to school hours and school days.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting an alert based on based on the determination that the first position is within a predetermined distance of the target location and that the current date and time is within the defined time window.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting an alert when the average velocity of the personal communication device exceeds the predetermined value.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first position is obtained using a global positioning system included in the first portable personal communication device.

10. A system for inhibiting a function of a portable personal communications device, the system comprising:

a global positioning system receiver configured to determine a first position of the portable personal communication device;

a memory configured to store a target location and a defined time window; and

a hardware processor;

wherein said hardware processor is configured to:

determine an average velocity of the portable personal communications device;

determine when the first position of the portable personal communication device is within a predetermined distance of the target location;

determining a current date and time;

determining whether the current date and time is within a predetermined time window;

inhibit a first function of the personal communication device based on the determination that the first position is within the predetermined distance of the target location and that the current date and time is within the defined time window; and

inhibit a second function of the portable personal communications device when the average velocity of the personal communication device exceeds a predetermined value.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein one of the first function or the second function comprises a texting function.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein one of the first function or the second function comprises a voice communication function.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the target location comprises a location of a school.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the defined time window corresponds to school hours and school days.

15. The system of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting an alert based on based on the determination that the first position is within the predetermined distance of the target location and that the current date and time is within a defined time window.

16. The system of claim 10 , further comprising an antenna configured to transmit an alert when the average velocity of the personal communication device exceeds the predetermined value.
