Abstract

Methods, systems and computer readable media for efficient state change support for hierarchical data models in a virtualized system are described. In some implementations, the method can include determining a system status including a system-level bit masked word having a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a status of a different hierarchical level of the system, and receiving a change notification. The method can also include querying an entity at a lower hierarchy level if a cascaded state change is identified for that entity. The method can further include continuing to query one or more entities in successively lower hierarchy levels so long as a cascaded state change is identified for a corresponding entity in a lower hierarchy level. The method can also include determining the current status for one or more entities having a changed status. Identifying a cascaded state change can include performing a logical exclusive OR operation on a previous status bit masked word and a current status bit masked word of an entity.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

determining a system status including a system-level bit masked word having a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a status of a different hierarchical level of the system;

receiving a change notification;

querying an entity at a lower hierarchy level if a cascaded state change is identified for that entity;

continuing to query one or more entities in successively lower hierarchy levels so long as a cascaded state change is identified for a corresponding entity in a lower hierarchy level; and

determining the current status for one or more entities having a changed status,

wherein identifying a cascaded state change includes performing a logical exclusive OR operation on a previous status bit masked word and a current status bit masked word of an entity.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system status includes a plurality of system-level bit masked words each word corresponding to a different system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the change notification includes querying the system-level bit masked word.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving an indication of one of a new entity in the system or a removed entity in the system.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving a new value of an existing entity.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving an indication of an alarm in an entity in the system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the previous status bit masked word is stored in a management system and the current status bit masked word is received from a virtualized system.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving a change notification includes receiving a status word as a portion of a heartbeat signal.

9. A system comprising one or more processors configured to perform operations including:

determining a system status including a system-level bit masked word having a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a status of a different hierarchical level of the system;

receiving a change notification;

querying an entity at a lower hierarchy level if a cascaded state change is identified for that entity;

continuing to query one or more entities in successively lower hierarchy levels so long as a cascaded state change is identified for a corresponding entity in a lower hierarchy level; and

determining the current status for one or more entities having a changed status,

wherein identifying a cascaded state change includes performing a logical exclusive OR operation on a previous status bit masked word and a current status bit masked word of an entity.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the system status includes a plurality of system-level bit masked words each word corresponding to a different system.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving the change notification includes querying the system-level bit masked word.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving an indication of one of a new entity in the system or a removed entity in the system.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving a new value of an existing entity.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving an indication of an alarm in an entity in the system.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the previous status bit masked word is stored in a management system and the current status bit masked word is received from a virtualized system.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving a change notification includes receiving a status word as a portion of a heartbeat signal.

17. A nontransitory computer readable medium having stored thereon software instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations including:

determining a system status including a system-level bit masked word having a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a status of a different hierarchical level of the system;

receiving a change notification;

querying an entity at a lower hierarchy level if a cascaded state change is identified for that entity;

continuing to query one or more entities in successively lower hierarchy levels so long as a cascaded state change is identified for a corresponding entity in a lower hierarchy level; and

determining the current status for one or more entities having a changed status,

wherein identifying a cascaded state change includes performing a logical exclusive OR operation on a previous status bit masked word and a current status bit masked word of an entity.

18. The nontransitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the system status includes a plurality of system-level bit masked words each word corresponding to a different system.

19. The nontransitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein receiving the change notification includes receiving an indication of one of a new entity in the system, a removed entity in the system, an alarm in an entity in the system and a new value of an existing entity.

20. The nontransitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein receiving a change notification includes receiving a status word as a portion of a heartbeat signal.
