Abstract

In embodiments of the present invention, a method and system is provided for commissioning improved intelligent, LED-based lighting systems. The LED based lighting systems may include fixtures with one or more LED light bars, integrated sensors, onboard intelligence to send and receive signals and control the LED light bars, and network connectivity to other fixtures.

Claims (38)

1 . A method of managing artificial lighting in an environment illuminated by at least one lighting fixture coupled to a database via a data network, the method comprising:

(A) storing a plurality of lighting parameters in the database, the plurality of lighting parameters including a desired illuminance level and/or a desired illuminance distribution in the environment as agreed upon by an operator of the environment and a manager of the at least one lighting fixture;

(B) performing a measurement of an illuminance level and/or an illuminance distribution in the environment;

(C) performing a comparison of the measurement of the illuminance level and/or the illuminance distribution in the environment made in (B) with the desired illuminance level and/or the desired illuminance distribution stored in (A); and

(D) adjusting the at least one lighting fixture via the data network in response to the comparison made in (C).

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (B) comprises measuring illuminance due to natural light and to illumination provided by the at least one lighting fixture.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (B) comprises performing the measurement at a predetermined time and/or during a predetermined event.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (C) comprises verifying the measurement against one or more lighting parameters specified in an agreement between the operator of the environment and the manager of the at least one lighting fixture.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

(E) logging the measurement made in (B);

(F) logging an indication of the adjustment made in (D); and

(G) generating a report based upon the measurement logged in (E) and the indication logged in (F).

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

(H) analyzing the report generated in (G) for compliance with an agreement between the operator of the environment and the manager of the at least one lighting fixture.

7 . A method of managing artificial lighting in an environment illuminated by at least one lighting fixture according to an agreement between an operator of the environment and an administrator of the at least one lighting fixture, the method comprising:

(A) illuminating the environment with the at least one lighting fixture so as to provide as an illuminance level and/or an illuminance distribution specified in the agreement between the operater of the environment and the administrator of the at least one lighting fixture;

(B) measuring, by the administrator of the at least one lighting fixture, the illuminance level and/or the illuminance distribution provided by the at least one lighting fixture in (A);

(C) determining, by the administrator of the at least one lighting fixture, a charge based at least in part on the illuminance level and/or the illuminance distribution measured in (B); and

(D) providing the operator of the environment with a report indicative of the charge determined in (C).

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein (A) comprises illuminating a portion of the environment specified in the agreement between the operator of the environment and a manager of the at least one lighting fixture.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein (A) comprises illuminating at least a portion of the environment with structured light to distinguish illumination provided by the at least one lighting fixture from ambient light.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein (B) comprises measuring the illuminance at a predetermined time and/or during a predetermined event.

11 . The method of claim 7 , wherein (C) comprises determining the charge based on a total illuminance provided in (A).

12 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

(E) measuring energy consumed by the at least one lighting fixture; and

(F) reconciling the energy measured in (E) with utility charges for energy consumption.

13 . A system for managing illumination of an environment with artificial lighting from at least one lighting fixture, the system comprising:

a database to store a plurality of lighting parameters, the plurality of lighting parameters including a desired illuminance level and/or a desired illuminance distribution in the environment as agreed upon by an operator of the environment and a manager of the at least one lighting fixture;

at least one sensor to perform a measurement of an illuminance level and/or an illuminance distribution in the environment; and

a processor, operably coupled to the database and the at least one sensor, to (i) perform a comparison of the measurement of the illuminance level and/or the illuminance distribution in the environment with the desired illuminance level and/or the desired illuminance distribution stored in the database and (ii) adjust the at least one lighting fixture in response to the comparison.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure illuminance due to natural light and illuminance due to illumination provided by the at least one lighting fixture.

15 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to perform the measurement at a predetermined time and/or during a predetermined event.

16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to verify the measurement against one or more lighting parameters specified in an agreement between the operator of the environment and the manager of the at least one lighting fixture.

17 . The system of claim 13 , wherein processor is configured to:

log the measurement made by the at least one sensor; and

log an indication of the adjustment made to the at least one lighting fixture; and

generate a report based upon the measurement and the indication of the adjustment.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the processor is further configured to analyze the report for compliance with an agreement between the operator of the environment and the manager of the at least one lighting fixture.
