Abstract

An implant for use in spinal surgery includes a resilient element having an inflatable cavity. It is formed of a biologically compatible material and is arranged for placement between end plates of adjacent vertebra. The implant may also include a wound disc replacement element. A method of performing spinal surgery on a patient includes securely mounting a patient onto a patient support table; imaging a spinal region of the patient; building up a three-dimensional image file of the spinal region of the patient; storing the image file; and utilizing the image file for planning and carrying out computer controlled spinal surgery on the patient utilizing the implant. A computer-controlled surgical implant system includes a steerable endosurgical implanting assembly operative to install the implant at a desired location in a patient; and a computerized controlled, which operates the steerable endosurgical implanting assembly.

Claims (18)

1. A method for performing fusion of a spinal segment including a pair of adjacent vertebrae and an intervertebral disc space having an intervertebral disc between the adjacent vertebrae, wherein the spinal segment has an anterior aspect, a posterior aspect and opposing lateral aspects:

(a) forming a passage through a lateral aspect of the intervertebral disc, removing disc material, and preparing at least one endplate of the adjacent vertebrae for receipt of fusion implants into the intervertebral disc space;

(b) laterally inserting a posterior implant into the intervertebral disc space and positioning the posterior implant such that the posterior implant extends across the intervertebral disc space from a first edge along one lateral aspect to a second edge along the opposing lateral aspect and such that a posterior side of the posterior implant lies adjacent a third edge along the posterior aspect; and

(c) laterally inserting an anterior implant into the intervertebral disc space and positioning the anterior implant such that the anterior implant extends across the intervertebral disc space from the first edge along one lateral aspect to the second edge along the opposing lateral aspect and such that an anterior side of the anterior implant lies adjacent a fourth edge along the anterior aspect; wherein the posterior side of the posterior implant matches the contour of the posterior aspect of the spinal segment.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising the additional step of inserting bone graft material between the posterior implant and the anterior implant.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the bone graft material is contained within a bone graft containment device laterally inserted between the posterior implant and the anterior implant.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein preparing at least one endplate includes decorticating the endplate to provide a flat surface.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein decorticating the endplate is performed with a mill.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein preparing at least one endplate further includes machining a pair of substantially straight channels in the endplate.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the posterior implant includes an endplate engaging surface having a protrusion matching a posterior most channel of the pair of substantially straight channels.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the anterior implant includes an endplate engaging surface having a protrusion matching an anterior most channel of the pair of substantially straight channels.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein an anterior side of the posterior implant is straight.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anterior side of the anterior implant matches the contour of the anterior aspect of the spinal segment.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the posterior side of the anterior implant is straight.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the posterior side includes a concave segment between two convex segments.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the posterior implant and anterior implant include engagement features for mating with an insertion tool.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the posterior implant is bone.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anterior implant is bone.
