Abstract

Composite compounds of tin and lithium, silicon and lithium, or tin, silicon, and lithium having tin and silicon nano-dispersed in a lithium-containing matrix may be used as electrode materials and particularly anode materials for use with rechargeable batteries. Methods of making the composite compounds include the oxidation of alloys, the reaction of stabilized lithium metal powder with tin and silicon oxides, and the reaction of inorganic salts of lithium with tin and silicon containing compounds.

Claims (12)

1. An electrode comprising a compound formed from silicon and/or tin nanoparticles suspended within a lithium-containing framework comprising a stabilized lithium metal powder, said framework providing a stable structure, increased capacity for said electrode and reducing irreversible capacity loss suffered by said electrode.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the compound is single phase or multi-phase.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of Si:Li 2 O, Si:2Li 2 O, Si:3Li 2 O, and SiSn:3Li 2 O.

4. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises a compound represented by the formula Sn 1-x Si x :αLi 2 O, wherein 0≤x≤1 and 1≤α≤3.

5. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises a compound represented by the formula Sn 1-x Si x :αLi 2 O+γSn 1-y Si y :βLi 2 O, wherein 0≤x≤1, 1≤α≤3, 0≤y≤1, 1≤β≤3, and 0<γ<1.

6. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the compound is single phase or multi-phase.

7. A battery comprising an electrode formed from a compound comprising silicon and/or tin nanoparticles suspended within a lithium-containing framework comprising a stabilized lithium metal powder, said framework providing a stable structure increased capacity for said battery and reducing irreversible capacity loss suffered by said battery.

8. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the compound is single phase or multi-phase.

9. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of Si:Li 2 O, Si:2Li 2 O, Si:3Li 2 O, and SiSn:3Li 2 O.

10. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the compound comprises a compound represented by the formula Sn 1-x Si x :αLi 2 O, wherein 0≤x≤1 and 1≤α≤3.

11. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the compound comprises a compound represented by the formula Sn 1-x Si x :αLi 2 O+γSn 1-y Si y :βLi 2 O, wherein 0≤x≤1, 1≤α≤3, 0≤y≤1, 1≤β≤3, and 0<γ<1.

12. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the compound is single phase or multi-phase.
