Abstract

A two piece humeral component for use in joint arthroplasty which is adapted to be implanted into a joint and engaged by a socket component of the joint. The joint component includes a body having a first articulating surface and a second medial surface opposite the first articulating surface. The first articulating surface is adapted to be engaged by the socket and the second medial surface is adapted to be secured to mounting portion. The mounting portion has a first surface and a second medial surface. The first surface is adapted to be fixably engaged to the second mounting portion of the humeral component. The second medial surface is adapted to be secured to the humerus. A peg which has a first end adapted to engage a cavity found in the humerus is disposed on the mounting portion's second medial surface.

Claims (34)

1. A method for implanting a humeral component during shoulder arthroplasty, the method comprising:

reaming at least a portion of a head of a humerus to form a reamed convex surface on the head of the humerus;

preparing a hole in the head of the humerus;

providing a fixation component having a plurality of coupling flanges that define a plurality of bone screw holes and a generally cylindrical fixation member extending from a shelf;

implanting the fixation component onto the humerus by inserting the fixation member into the hole prepared in the humerus; bending the coupling flanges, in one of a hospital, a surgical center, or medical facility, to match a shape of the reamed convex surface such that, the plurality of coupling flanges rest against the reamed convex surface the head of the humerus;

inserting at least one bone screw in at least one of the plurality of bone screw holes defined by the coupling flanges such that the at least one bone screw adheres to bone;

providing a head member having a first articulating surface and a second fixation surface opposite the first articulating surface; and

securing the head member to the fixation component.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein securing the head member to the fixation component includes attaching the head member to the fixation component by way of a locking taper.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fixation member defines a bone engaging thread.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising rotatably adjusting the head member relative to the fixation component by way of a coupling member.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of coupling flanges are independently articulable from one another.

6. A method for implanting a humeral component during shoulder arthroplasty, the method comprising:

reaming a spherical surface of a head of a humerus to form a reamed convex surface on the head of the humerus;

preparing a hole in the head of the humerus;

implanting a fixation component onto the humerus by inserting a fixation member of the fixation component into the hole prepared in the humerus; bending a coupling flange of the fixation component in one of a hospital, a surgical center, or medical facility to match a shape of the reamed convex surface such that the coupling flange rests against and conforms to the reamed convex surface the head of the humerus;

inserting a bone screw into defined by the coupling flange of the fixation component such that the bone screw adheres to bone; and

securing a head member to the fixation component, the head member having an articulating surface and a fixation surface opposite the articulating surface.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein securing the head member to the fixation component includes attaching the head member to the fixation component by way of a locking taper.

8. The method of claim 6 ,

wherein the fixation member defines a bone engaging thread, and

wherein implanting the fixation component into the humerus includes rotating the fixation component to screw the fixation component into the head of the humerus using the bone engaging thread.

9. A method for implanting a humeral component during shoulder arthroplasty, the method comprising:

reaming at least a portion of a head of a humerus to form a reamed convex surface on the head of the humerus;

preparing a hole in the head of the humerus;

providing a fixation component having a plurality of coupling flanges that define a plurality of bone screw holes and a generally cylindrical fixation member extending from a shelf;

implanting the fixation component onto the humerus by inserting the fixation member into the hole prepared in the humerus,

bending, in one of a hospital, surgical center, or medical facility, the coupling flanges to match a shape of the reamed convex surface on the head of the humerus

inserting at least one bone screw in at least one of the plurality of bone screw holes defined by the coupling flanges such that the at least one bone screw adheres to bone;

providing a head member having a first articulating surface and a second fixation surface opposite the first articulating surface; and

securing the head member to the fixation component.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein securing the head member to the fixation component includes attaching the head member to the fixation component by way of a locking taper.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the fixation member defines a bone engaging thread.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising rotatably adjusting the head member relative to the fixation component by way of a coupling member.
