Abstract

A mechanism for removing a fluid-filled object from a patient. The apparatus includes a deflation tube with a puncture member at one end of the tube for piercing a hole in the object wall. The apparatus includes a retrieval mechanism slidable within the deflation tube lumen. The retrieval mechanism includes an expansion element that is expandable when positioned within the object from a first configuration with a dimension less than that of the deflation tube lumen to a second or deployed configuration with a dimension that is greater than an outer dimension of the puncture member. The expansion element contacts an inner surface of the inflatable object as the deflation tube and retrieval mechanism are withdrawn from the body cavity. The expansion element may be a T-bar, a foldable anchor, an inflatable member, or another expandable form.

Claims (32)

1. A method for evacuating and removing a fluid-filled object positioned in a body cavity of a patient, comprising:

positioning a deflation device in the body cavity;

piercing a wall of the fluid-filled object with the deflation device, wherein the deflation device comprises a tube with a lumen;

displacing a retrieval mechanism in the lumen of the tube, wherein the retrieval mechanism comprises an inflatable expansion element having a deployed configuration greater in size than an outer diameter of the tube and wherein the displacing comprises extending the inflatable expansion element at least partially out of the lumen and into the pierced wall of the object;

expanding the inflatable expansion element to the deployed configuration by inserting a fluid into the inflatable expansion element to apply pressure against an inner surface of the inflatable expansion element; and

withdrawing the retrieval mechanism and the deflation device from the body cavity, wherein during the withdrawing an outer surface of the inflatable expansion element contacts an inner surface of the wall of the object, forcing the object to be removed from the body cavity with the retrieval mechanism.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expanding of the inflatable expansion element is controlled by achieving a predetermined pressure in the inflatable expansion element.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expanding of the inflatable expansion element is controlled by inserting a predetermined volume of the fluid.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the inflatable expansion element is textured to improve contact with the inner surface of the wall of the object.

5. A method for evacuating and removing an intragastric balloon from a stomach of a patient, comprising:

positioning a deflation device in the stomach;

piercing a wall of the intragastric balloon with the deflation device, wherein the deflation device comprises a tube with a lumen;

displacing a retrieval mechanism in the lumen of the tube, wherein the retrieval mechanism comprises a deployment member and an expansion element coupled to an end of the deployment member, the expansion element having a deployed configuration greater in size than an outer diameter of the tube and wherein the displacing comprises extending the expansion element at least partially out of the lumen and into the pierced wall of the intragastric balloon;

expanding the expansion element to the deployed configuration after the expansion element has extended at least partially out of the lumen and into the pierced wall of the intragastric balloon; and

withdrawing the retrieval mechanism and the deflation device from the stomach, wherein during the withdrawing the expansion element contacts an inner surface of the wall of the intragastric balloon, forcing the intragastric balloon to be removed from the stomach with the retrieval mechanism.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the expansion element comprises an inflatable retrieval balloon.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the expansion of the retrieval balloon is controlled by achieving a predetermined pressure in the retrieval balloon.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the expansion of the balloon is controlled by inserting a predetermined volume of the fluid in the retrieval balloon.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the outer surface of the retrieval balloon is textured to improve contact with the inner surface of the wall of the intragastric balloon.

10. A method for evacuating and removing an intragastric balloon from a stomach of a patient, comprising:

inserting a retrieval balloon in an unexpanded configuration through an opening in the intragastric balloon;

expanding the retrieval balloon into an inflated configuration, the retrieval balloon in the expanded configuration having a size too large to fit through the opening; and

withdrawing the retrieval balloon to cause the retrieval balloon to contact an inner surface of the wall of the intragastric balloon, thereby forcing the intragastric balloon to be removed from the stomach with the retrieval balloon.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

positioning a deflation device in the stomach; and

piercing a wall of the intragastric balloon with the deflation device to form the opening in the intragastric balloon.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the deflation device includes a first tube having a diameter, and the retrieval balloon in the expanded configuration has a diameter substantially greater than the diameter of the first tube.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the retrieval balloon is coupled to a distal end of a second tube that extends within and is longitudinally displaceable relative to the first tube.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein during the inserting the retrieval balloon in the unexpanded configuration through the opening in the intragastric balloon, the retrieval balloon is provided within a lumen of the second tube.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the expansion of the retrieval balloon is controlled by achieving a predetermined pressure in the retrieval balloon.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the expansion of the retrieval balloon is controlled by inserting a predetermined volume of the fluid in the retrieval balloon.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the outer surface of the retrieval balloon is textured to improve contact with the inner surface of the wall of the intragastric balloon.
