Abstract

Disclosed herein are two-layer, low compression golf balls including a low compression rubber core and a single cover layer.

Claims (27)

1 . A two-layer golf ball consisting essentially of:

a core having a compression of less than 20 and formed from a polybutadiene blend composition, the polybutadiene blend composition comprising a first polybutadiene and a second polybutadiene; and

a cover layer formed from a thermoplastic composition;

wherein the golf ball has a compression of from 25 to 55.

2 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer has a Shore D hardness of greater than 58.

3 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer has a Shore D hardness of greater than 60.

4 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the compression of the golf ball is from 30 to 50.

5 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the compression of the golf ball is from 40 to 45.

6 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the core has a positive hardness gradient wherein the center hardness of the core is at least 10 Shore C units less than the outer surface hardness of the core.

7 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the center hardness of the core is at least 15 Shore C units less than the outer surface hardness of the core.

8 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer composition is formed from a composition comprising a first ionomer and a second ionomer.

9 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the first ionomer is a partially neutralized ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer.

10 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of from 0.25 to 0.28 and an aerodynamic force angle of from 34° to 46° at a Reynolds Number of 230000 and a spin ratio of 0.080, and wherein the golf ball has an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of from 0.26 to 0.29 and an aerodynamic force angle of from 36° to 48° at a Reynolds Number of 208000 and a spin ratio of 0.090.

11 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of from 0.26 to 0.30 and an aerodynamic force angle of from 38° to 50° at a Reynolds Number of 190000 and a spin ratio of 0.100.

12 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an aerodynamic coefficient magnitude of from 0.27 to 0.32 and an aerodynamic force angle of from 40° to 55° at a Reynolds Number of 170000 and a spin ratio of 0.110.

13 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the golf ball comprises a plurality of dimples on the outer surface thereof, and wherein the dimples are arranged in a tetrahedron-based dimple pattern.

14 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 13 , wherein at least 80% of the dimples have an edge angle of 14°.

15 . A two-layer golf ball consisting essentially of:

a core having a center hardness of 70 Shore C or less, an outer surface hardness of 80 Shore C or less, and formed from a polybutadiene blend composition, the polybutadiene blend composition comprising a first polybutadiene and a second polybutadiene; and

a cover layer formed from a thermoplastic composition;

wherein the golf ball has a compression of from 25 to 55; and

wherein the center hardness of the core is at least 10 Shore C units less than the outer surface hardness of the core.

16 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 15 , wherein the center hardness of the core is at least 15 Shore C units less than the outer surface hardness of the core.

17 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 15 , wherein the center hardness of the core is at least 20 Shore C units less than the outer surface hardness of the core.

18 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 15 , wherein the cover layer has a Shore D hardness of 60 or greater.

19 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 15 , wherein the compression of the core is less than 20.

20 . The two-layer golf ball of claim 15 , wherein the compression of the golf ball is from 40 to 45.
