Abstract

The present invention relates to a fully integrated sterilizable one time use disposable tissue visualization device and methods for using such devices. Preferred embodiments of the invention facilitate the visualization of an internal tissue site while causing a minimum of damage to the surrounding tissue. Further preferred embodiments may allow for the delivery of fluids and other treatment to an internal tissue site.

Claims (55)

1. A sterilized, integrated, one time use disposable tissue visualization device, comprising:

a handle, the handle comprising a light source;

an elongate, rigid tubular probe, extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end affixed to the handle, and a distal end having a sharpened tip;

wherein the longitudinal axis extends concentrically along the center of the rigid tubular probe;

an elongate optical element extending through the probe, the optical element having a proximal end in optical communication with an image sensor and a distal end;

a control on the handle, for axially moving the tubular probe between a proximal position in which the sharpened tip is proximal to the distal end of the optical element, and a distal position in which the sharpened tip is distal to the distal end of the optical element; and

a cord integrally connected to the handle, for releasable connection to an external viewing device, wherein the handle is integrally connected to the probe such that the cord, handle, and probe comprise a single integral unit wherein the cord, handle and probe may not be readily removed from one another;

wherein the handle, cord and probe are contained in a single sterile package;

wherein the optical element has an outside diameter that is smaller than an inside diameter of the tubular probe to define a lumen extending the length of the tubular probe, the lumen configured to deliver a liquid to a tissue site;

wherein the distal end of the probe is inclined relative to the longitudinal axis, the point of the sharpened tip of the probe aligned with the longitudinal axis and configured to pierce through tissue along the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the distal end of the elongate optical element is configured to provide visualization along the longitudinal axis past the distal end of the probe;

wherein an outer diameter of the distal end of the elongate optical element is biased against an inner diameter of the point of the sharpened tip of the elongate tubular probe, the bias configured to press the distal end of the elongate optical element against the distal end of the elongate tubular probe to provide blunting of the elongate tubular probe; and

wherein the blunting is configured to prevent damage to a tissue site.

2. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , further comprising an image capture control on the handle.

The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the inclined axis of the probe is in a first direction relative to the longitudinal axis, and the cord is attached to the handle at a second direction relative to the longitudinal axis, approximately 180 degrees offset from the first direction.

4. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein axial proximal movement of the probe deflects the distal end of the optical element laterally by at least about 1 degree.

5. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the optical element comprises at least one optical fiber and a distal lens.

6. The tissue visualization device of claim 5 , wherein the optical element comprises the at least one optical fiber and distal lens carried within a hypotube.

7. The tissue visualization device of claim 6 , wherein the optical element comprises at least one image guide for carrying an image to the sensor, and at least one illumination fiber bundle for illuminating a target tissue site.

8. The tissue visualization device of claim 5 , wherein the optical element comprises a fiber bundle having at least about 6,000 fibers.

9. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the lumen is in communication with an injection or aspiration port on the handle.

10. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the handle comprises a clamshell shape, comprising a seam connecting a clamshell top and a clamshell bottom.

11. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein an edge of the sharpened tip is blunted, the edge facing away from the longitudinal axis.

12. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the liquid comprises an anti-inflammatory molecule.

13. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the liquid comprises a UV-sensitive liquid, the UV-sensitive liquid configured to solidify upon application of UV light.

14. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the handle comprises an image sensor.

15. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the probe comprises an image sensor.

16. The tissue visualization device of claim 1 , wherein the image sensor is positioned at the distal tip of the optical hypotube, the image sensor configured to be extended beyond the distal tip of the tubular probe when the tubular probe is in the proximal position.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the handle further comprises a memory chip comprising an algorithm, the algorithm configured to correct image artifacts, wherein the algorithm is uniquely generated for an individual device.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the sharpened tip comprises a reverse grind, the reverse grind providing blunting at an outer diameter of the probe and sharpening at an inner diameter of the probe, the reverse grind configured to blunt an edge of the sharpened tip when the optical hypotube is positioned against the probe.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the elongate optical element comprises an inclined axis, the inclined axis of the elongate optical element at a different angle from the inclined axis of the distal end of the probe, and wherein the inclined axis of the elongate optical element is configured to bias the elongate optical element towards an inner diameter of the point of the sharpened tip.

20. A sterilized, integrated, one time use disposable visualization needle, comprising:

an elongate tubular needle, extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end affixed to a handle and a distal end having a sharpened tip;

wherein the longitudinal axis extends concentrically along the center of the rigid tubular needle;

an elongate optical element extending through the needle, the optical element in optical communication with an image sensor;

a control on the handle, for axially moving the needle between a proximal position in which the sharpened tip is proximal to a distal end of the optical element, and a distal position in which the sharpened tip is distal to the distal end of the optical element;

wherein the distal end of the needle is inclined relative to the longitudinal axis, the point of the sharpened tip of the needle aligned with the longitudinal axis and configured to pierce tissue along the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the distal end of the elongate optical element is configured to provide visualization along the longitudinal axis past the distal end of the needle;

wherein an outer diameter of the distal end of the elongate optical element is biased against an inner diameter of the point of the sharpened tip of the needle, the bias configured to press the distal end of the elongate optical element against the distal end of the elongate tubular needle to provide blunting of the elongate tubular needle; and

wherein the blunting is configured to prevent damage to a tissue site.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein an outer diameter of the distal end of the needle is less than about 2.5 mm.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein an outer diameter of the distal end of the needle is approximately 2.1 mm.

The device of claim 20 , wherein the sharpened tip comprises a reverse grind, the reverse grind providing blunting at an outer diameter of the needle and sharpening at an inner diameter of the needle, the reverse grind configured to blunt an edge of the sharpened tip when the optical element is positioned against the point of the sharpened tip of the needle.

24. The device of claim 20 , wherein the optical element has an outside diameter that is smaller than an inside diameter of the elongate tubular needle to define a lumen extending the length of the elongate tubular needle, the lumen configured to deliver a liquid to a tissue site.

25. The device of claim 20 , wherein the needle, handle, and a cord are integrally connected, such that the needle, handle, and cord cannot be readily removed from one another.

26. The device of claim 20 , wherein the handle further comprises a memory chip comprising an algorithm, the algorithm configured to correct image artifacts, wherein the algorithm is uniquely generated for an individual device.

27. A sterilized, integrated, one time use disposable visualization needle, comprising:

an elongate tubular needle, extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end affixed to a handle and a distal end having a sharpened tip;

an elongate optical element extending through the needle, the optical element in optical communication with an image sensor;

a control on the handle, for axially moving the needle between a proximal position in which the sharpened tip is proximal to a distal end of the optical element, and a distal position in which the sharpened tip is distal to the distal end of the optical element; and

wherein an outer diameter of the distal end of the elongate optical element is biased against an inner diameter of the point of the sharpened tip of the needle, the bias configured to press the distal end of the elongate optical element against the distal end of the elongate tubular needle to provide blunting of the elongate tubular needle; and

wherein the blunting is configured to prevent damage to a tissue site.

28. The device of claim 27 , wherein the distal end of the elongate optical element comprises an inclined axis inclined towards the point of the sharpened tip of the needle.

29. The device of claim 27 , wherein the optical element has an outside diameter that is smaller than an inside diameter of the elongate tubular needle to define a lumen extending the length of the elongate tubular needle, the lumen configured to deliver a liquid to a tissue site.

30. The device of claim 27 , wherein the needle, handle, and a cord are integrally connected, such that the needle, handle, and cord cannot be readily removed from one another.
