Abstract

Some embodiments provide a system that generates a coil switching signal for a brushless DC motor. During operation, the system determines a magnetic field of the brushless DC motor at a first time and a magnetic field of the brushless DC motor at a second time. Then, the coil switching signal is generated based on a relationship between the magnetic field determined at the first time and a first predetermined threshold, and the magnetic field determined at the second time and a second predetermined threshold.

Claims (30)

1. A motor controller comprising:

an integrated circuit;

a magnetic sensor to measure a magnetic field;

a first predetermined threshold having a magnitude and a polarity;

a second predetermined threshold distinct from the first predetermined threshold,

the integrated circuit configure to generate a first signal to reverse the direction of a motor driving current when the measured magnetic field is greater than the first threshold and smaller than the second threshold;

a third predetermined threshold distinct from the first and the second predetermined;

a fourth predetermined threshold distinct from the first, the second, and the third predetermined threshold; and

the integrated circuit further configured to generate a second signal to reverse the direction of the motor driving current when the measured magnetic field is greater than the third threshold and smaller than the fourth threshold.

2. The motor controller of claim 1 , in which the measurements include measurements of magnitude and polarity of the magnetic field.

3. The motor controller of claim 1 , in which one of the thresholds is BRP and another one of the thresholds is BOP.

4. The motor controller of claim 3 , in which one of the thresholds is greater than BRP in magnitude and has same polarity.

5. The motor controller of claim 4 , in which the signal switches polarities when a measurement of the magnetic field is smaller than BRP in magnitude and has same polarity.

6. The motor controller of claim 5 , in which the signal switches polarities when the measured magnetic field is descending in magnitude.

7. The motor controller of claim 3 , in which one of the thresholds is greater than BOP in magnitude and has same polarity.

8. The motor controller of claim 7 , in which the signal switches polarities when a measurement of the magnetic field is smaller than BOP in magnitude and has same polarity.

9. The motor controller of claim 8 , in which the signal switches polarities when the measured magnetic field is descending in magnitude.

10. A method of controlling a motor, comprising:

receiving measurements of a magnetic field;

determining a measurement being greater in magnitude than a first threshold;

determining a subsequent measurement being smaller in magnitude than a second threshold; and

switching polarities of a current to a motor;

determining a measurement being smaller in magnitude than a third threshold;

determining a subsequent measurement being greater in magnitude than a fourth threshold; and switching polarities of the current to the motor.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising

determining a measurement being greater in magnitude than a third threshold;

determining a subsequent measurement being smaller in magnitude than a fourth threshold; and switching polarities of the signal.

12. The method of claim 10 , in which the third and the fourth thresholds have a second polarity opposite the first polarity.

13. The method of claim 10 , in which the current is sent to a motor stator coil.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising measuring the magnetic field with a Hall sensor.
