Abstract

A video processing unit configured to convert a video image to stimulation patterns for stimulating neural tissue in a subject's eye and comprising a power button, wherein the video processing unit is configured to be powered on after a first time interval upon activation of a power button, wherein the video processing unit is configured to be powered off after a second time interval upon activation of a power button.

Claims (23)

1. A visual prosthesis configured to convert a video image to stimulation patterns for stimulating neural tissue in a subject's eye, a camera configured to obtain a video image;

a video processing unit configured to receive the image from the camera and creating stimulation patterns based upon the image;

a bidirectional wireless communication system configured to send stimulation signals from the video processing unit to the implantable stimulation system and operational data including error messages from the stimulation system to the video processing unit;

an implantable stimulation system suitable to stimulate neural tissue according to the stimulation patterns;

wherein the video processing unit functions in a normal operating mode and an error mode wherein the video processing unit is configured to shut down automatically when in the error mode.

2. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising a power supply distribution and monitoring circuit and wherein the error mode is entered in response to an error in a power supply distribution and monitoring circuit.

3. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising a battery and battery monitoring circuit and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a low battery condition alert from the battery monitoring circuit.

4. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 ,

further comprising firmware and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a firmware error.

5. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising a watch dog timer and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a watch dog timer overrun.

6. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the error mode is entered in response to an error message from an implantable stimulation system.

7. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising an RF transmitter sending stimulation patterns to the implantabgle stimulation system and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a voltage or current error in an RF transmitter.

8. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the error mode is entered in response to a failure to receive a signal from the implantable stimulation system.

9. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising one or more manually operable user interface buttons on the video processing unit and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a manually operable user interface button.

10. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the error mode records the error state and resets the video processing unit, and shuts down automatically if the error state persists after the reset.

11. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , further comprising a power supply distribution and monitoring circuit and wherein the error mode is entered in response to an error in a power supply distribution and monitoring circuit.

12. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , further comprising a battery and battery monitoring circuit and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a low battery condition alert from the battery monitoring circuit.

13. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , further comprising firmware and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a firmware error.

14. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , further comprising a watch dog timer and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a watch dog timer overrun.

15. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , wherein the error mode is entered in response to an error message from the implantable stimulation system.

16. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , further comprising an RF transmitter sending stimulation patterns to the implantabgle stimulation system and wherein the error mode is entered in response to a voltage or current error in an RF transmitter.

17. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , wherein the error mode is entered in response to the lack of signal from an implantable stimulation system.

18. The visual prosthesis according to claim 10 , wherein the error mode is entered in response to a manually operable user interface button.
