Abstract

In a particular embodiment, a system includes an interface responsive to a network to receive data related to a first document and includes processing logic and memory accessible to the processing logic. The memory stores a plurality of modules executable by the processing logic to recursively retrieve documents, extract directed links and attributes, and traverse the directed links to identify a first set of search results. The plurality of modules includes a search module to retrieve one or more documents and includes an attribute extraction module to extract directed links and other attributes from the one or more documents. The plurality of modules further includes a backward/forward link traversal module to bi-directionally traverse directed links to identify documents and includes a graphical user interface (GUI) module to generate a GUI including data related to the first set of search results and to provide the GUI to a destination device via the network.

Claims (53)

1 . A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory accessible to the processor and storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

identify backward citations and forward citations associated with each search result of a set of search results corresponding to a seed data input, each backward citation including a bibliographic reference in the search result that identifies a document, each forward citation including a bibliographic reference within a document that identifies the search result;

retrieve documents corresponding to the forward citations and the backward citations from one or more data sources;

iteratively identify the backward citations and the forward citations in the retrieved documents and retrieve more documents corresponding to the backward citations and the forward citations for each document and for three or more iterations to produce a set of search results;

selectively filter the set of search results according to the seed data input to produce filtered search results; and

generate a graphical user interface (GUI) including at least a portion of the filtered search results.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

extract an attribute from the set of search results;

search at least one data source based on the attribute to retrieve ancillary data; and

join the ancillary data to the set of search results prior to selectively filtering the set of search results.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the filtered search results and associated ancillary data are included within the GUI.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a network interface coupled to the processor and configured to communicate with one or more devices through a network; and

wherein the memory further stores instructions that cause the processor to provide the GUI to a device through the network.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

extract a plurality of attributes from the set of search results; and

selectively pivot on at least one of the plurality of attributes to search at least one data source using the extracted attribute to determine a set of pivot search results.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the backward citations and the forward citations comprises a directed link including a hypertext link to a document.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the backward citations and the forward citations includes a bibliographic citation to a non-patent literature reference.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the seed data input includes a document identifier and a pre-defined type of analysis.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the pre-defined type of analysis includes a patent invalidity analysis.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor selectively filters the set of search results by removing documents that have a priority date that is later than a priority date associated with a patent corresponding to the document identifier.

11 . A method comprising:

receiving a seed data input at a search system;

automatically retrieving a document using the search system in response to the seed data;

iteratively searching a document space based on backward citations within the document and within documents corresponding to the backward citations to produce backward citation documents;

iteratively searching the document space based on forward citations corresponding to an attribute of the document and of documents corresponding to the forward citations to produce forward citation documents;

selectively filtering the backward citation documents and the forward citation documents based on the seed data input to produce filtered search results; and

generating a graphical user interface (GUI) including at least a portion of the filtered search results.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

extracting an attribute from the set of search results;

searching at least one data source based on the attribute to retrieve ancillary data associated with at least one result of the set of search results; and

joining the ancillary data to the set of search results prior to selectively filtering the set of search results.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein generating the GUI includes providing at least a portion of the filtered search results and the ancillary data.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

extracting a plurality of attributes from the set of search results; and

selectively pivoting on at least one of the plurality of attributes to search at least one data source using the extracted attribute to determine a set of pivot search results.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the backward citations and the forward citations comprises a directed link including a hypertext link to a document.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the backward citations and the forward citations includes a bibliographic citation to a non-patent literature reference.

The method of claim 11 , wherein selectively filtering the backward citation documents and the forward citation documents comprises removing the backward citation documents and the forward citation documents that have a priority date that is later than a priority date associated with a patent corresponding to a document identifier of the seed data input.

18 . A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory accessible to the processor and storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

perform a search operation on a document space based on a seed data input including a document identifier and a selection of a type of analysis, the search operation including retrieving documents based on backward citations and forward citations from the document associated with the document identifier and iteratively retrieving forward citations and backward citations from the documents to produce a set of search results through three or more iterations;

selectively filter the set of search results according to the type of analysis to produce filtered search results; and

generate a graphical user interface (GUI) including at least a portion of the filtered search results.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the type of analysis comprises a patent invalidity analysis and wherein the processor selectively filters the set of search results by removing documents having a priority date after a priority data of the document associated with the document identifier.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the memory further includes instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to:

extract an attribute from the set of search results;

search at least one data source based on the attribute to retrieve ancillary data associated with at least one result of the set of search results; and

join the ancillary data to the set of search results prior to selectively filtering the set of search results.
