Abstract

The present disclosure relates to an electrosurgical apparatus to generate a dual plasma stream to perform electrosurgery on a surgical site on a patient. The apparatus and method of the present disclosure generates a hot gas jet to a surgical site by generating two plasma beams that are electrically up to 180 degrees out of phase from each other. Since each beam uses the other beam to establish plasma currents at a load, the combined dual plasma stream can be used on non-conductive surfaces, e.g., a tissue at the surgical site. Furthermore, by applying different flow rates to the plasma beams, various scanning effects by the hot gas jet can be achieved.

Claims (34)

1. An electrosurgical system for generating a plasma stream on a surgical site of a patient, the system comprising:

an electrosurgical generator, coupled to an electrical power source, that generates electrosurgical energy; and

a plasma generator including at least first and second gas conduits with an individual electrode concentrically disposed within each of the first and second gas conduits, each electrode operatively coupled to the electrosurgical generator to selectively receive electrosurgical energy therefrom, the electrosurgical energy supplied to each electrode having a predetermined phase shift relative to each other,

wherein the electrodes each at least partially ionizes a carrier gas fed to the at least first and second gas conduits to create a single plasma discharge, and

wherein the at least first and second gas conduits are arranged at a predetermined angle relative to each other, the predetermined angle being adjustable.

2. The electrosurgical system as in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is adjustable.

3. The electrosurgical system as in claim 2 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is approximately 180 degrees.

4. The electrosurgical system as in claim 1 , wherein the electrosurgical generator further comprises first and second output stages, each output stage coupled to an individual electrode.

5. The electrosurgical system as in claim 4 , wherein each of the first and second output stages includes an adjustable oscillating circuit for selecting a phase angle of the electrosurgical energy being supplied therefrom.

6. The electrosurgical system as in claim 4 , wherein the electrosurgical generator further comprises:

an oscillator for providing electrosurgical energy at a first predetermined phase angle to the first output stage and a variable delay circuit; and

the variable delay circuit for providing electrosurgical energy at a second predetermined phase angle to the second output stage, wherein a difference in the first and second predetermined phase angles determines the predetermined phase shift.

7. The electrosurgical system as in claim 4 , wherein each of the first and second output stages includes a transformer where secondary windings of one of the transformers is reversed creating a fixed 180 degrees phase shift.

8. The electrosurgical system as in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined angle is in the range of about 0 degrees to about 180 degrees.

9. An electrosurgical system for generating a plasma stream on a surgical site of a patient, the system comprising:

an electrosurgical generator, coupled to an electrical power source, that generates electrosurgical energy; and

a plasma generator including at least first and second gas conduit pairs with an individual electrode concentrically disposed within each gas conduit forming at least first and second electrode pairs, each gas conduit of the gas conduit pair being arranged diametrically opposite the other gas conduit of the gas conduit pair about a central point, each electrode operatively coupled to the electrosurgical generator to selectively receive electrosurgical energy therefrom, the electrosurgical energy supplied to each electrode pair having a predetermined phase shift relative to each other,

wherein the electrodes each at least partially ionizes a carrier gas fed to the at least first and second gas conduit pairs to create a single plasma discharge, and

wherein the at least first and second gas conduit pairs are arranged at a predetermined angle relative to each other, the or predetermined angle being adjustable.

10. The electrosurgical system as in claim 9 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is adjustable.

11. The electrosurgical system as in claim 10 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is approximately 180 degrees.

12. A plasma generator for generating a plasma stream on a surgical site of a patient, the plasma generator comprising:

at least first and second gas conduits with an individual electrode concentrically disposed within each of the first and second gas conduits, each electrode configured to be coupled to an electrosurgical generator to selectively receive electrosurgical energy therefrom, the electrosurgical energy supplied to each electrode having a predetermined phase shift relative to each other,

wherein the electrodes each at least partially ionizes a carrier gas fed to the at least first and second gas conduits to create a single plasma discharge, and

wherein the at least first and second gas conduits are arranged at a predetermined angle relative to each other, the predetermined angle being adjustable.

13. The plasma generator as in claim 12 , wherein the predetermined angle is in the range of about 0 degrees to about 180 degrees.

14. A method for generating a plasma stream on a surgical site of a patient, the method comprising:

providing a plasma generator including at least first and second gas conduits with an individual electrode concentrically disposed within each of the first and second gas conduits;

arranging the at least first and second gas conduits at a predetermined angle relative to each other, the predetermined angle being adjustable; and

supplying electrosurgical energy to each electrode, the electrosurgical energy supplied to each electrode having a predetermined phase shift relative to each other,

wherein the electrodes each at least partially ionizes a carrier gas fed to the at least first and second gas conduits to create a single plasma discharge.

15. The method as in claim 14 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is adjustable.

16. The method as in claim 15 , wherein the predetermined phase shift is approximately 180 degrees.

17. The method as in claim 14 , wherein the predetermined angle is in the range of about 0 degrees to about 180 degrees.
