Abstract

A weight based load limiting system for a refuse vehicle. The system includes a weight determination module that generates a signal that varies in accordance with a vehicle weight. If the vehicle weight approaches or exceeds a predetermined maximum weight, the signal inhibits a portion of the loading or packing operation to prevent overloading the vehicle. In various configurations, the inhibiting can be to prevent a lifting of a refuse container to prevent empting the container into the vehicle hopper. In other various configurations, the inhibiting occurs by maintaining engine power to less than the engine power typically output during a packing operation.

Claims (19)

1. A refuse vehicle comprising:

a bin supported by the refuse vehicle;

a lift mechanism attachable to a container containing refuse to be added to the bin via a lift operation;

a weight determination system configured to determine a payload weight of the refuse vehicle, the payload weight varying in accordance with the weight of the refuse;

a controller configured to:

receive a payload weight signal from the weight determination system; and

in response to determining based on the payload weight signal that the payload weight of the refuse vehicle exceeds a predetermined value, generate and transmit a lockout signal; and

a lift lockout configured to:

receive the lockout signal from the controller, and

in response to receiving the lockout signal, prevent upward motion of the lift mechanism beyond a predetermined position and enable downward motion of the lift mechanism.

2. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the lift mechanism is a front lift mechanism configured to lift the container over the front of the refuse vehicle to deposit refuse in the bin.

3. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the lift mechanism further comprises a solenoid controlled air valve.

4. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the lift mechanism operates controls at least one of an electric or pneumatic circuit.

5. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the weight determination system comprises at least one of a weight sensor or a scale.

6. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the lift lockout comprises an interlock switch module configured to receive the lockout signal from the controller and an interlock configured to prevent upward motion of the lift mechanism and enable downward motion of the lift mechanism.

7. The refuse vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the lockout signal from the controller comprises an activation signal instructing the interlock switch module to activate the interlock.

8. The refuse vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the interlock comprises at least one of a solenoid or a pneumatic device.

9. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined value comprises a maximum vehicle payload.

10. The refuse vehicle of claim 2 wherein the front lift mechanism comprises a lift arm assembly comprises a first end coupled to the bin and a second end coupled to a fork mechanism.
