Abstract

A surgical instrument for supplying energy to tissue may comprise a handle, a trigger, an electrical input, and a shaft extending from the handle. The surgical instrument may comprise an end effector first and second tissue engaging surfaces that are slanted with respect to a transection plane. The end effector may, for example, have an electrode defining a V-shaped cross sectional profile. The end effector may comprise a plurality of raised surfaces that are received by a plurality of indentions when the end effector is in the closed position. The end effector may comprise a cutting member having a plurality of bands.

Claims (36)

1. A surgical end effector, comprising:

first and second jaw members movable relative to one another between an open position and a closed position to clamp tissue therebetween;

a first closure track formed in the first jaw member and extending along a length thereof;

a second closure track formed in the second jaw member and extending along a length thereof; and

a compression member configured to translate longitudinally along a length of the end effector such that a first portion of the compression member contacts the first closure track and a second portion of the compression member contacts the second closure track to apply a compression force to tissue as the compression member is advanced towards a distal end of the end effector;

wherein the first closure track includes at least one sloped or curved portion such that, when the first and second jaw members are in the closed position, a distance between the first closure track and the second closure track varies along a length of the end effector,

wherein the distance between the first closure track and the second closure track increases from a proximal end of the at least one sloped or curved portion to a distal end of the at least one sloped or curved portion.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first closure track further includes a closure ramp at a proximal end thereof configured to move the first and second jaw members from the open position to a substantially closed position, and wherein the at least one sloped or curved portion is disposed distal to the closure ramp.

3. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein the distance between the first closure track and the second closure track at a proximal end of the at least one sloped or curved portion is less than the distance between the first closure track and the second closure track at a distal end of the closure ramp.

4. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein the first closure track includes a full close ridge disposed at a distal end of the closure ramp, the compression member being configured to bring the first jaw member and the second jaw member to the closed position when advancing through the full close ridge.

5. The end effector of claim 4 , wherein the full close ridge is positioned between the closure ramp and the at least one sloped or curved portion.

6. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first closure track further includes a flat portion at a distal end of the first jaw member, and wherein the at least one sloped or curved portion is disposed proximal to the flat portion.

7. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second jaw members includes at least one electrode disposed on a surface thereof that is configured to contact tissue clamped between the first and second jaw members when in the closed position.

8. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the second closure track has a flat profile.

9. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the second closure track includes at least one sloped or curved portion.

10. A method for actuating a surgical instrument, comprising:

positioning an end effector having first and second jaw members such that tissue is disposed within a gap between the first and second jaw members;

applying a first compression force to the tissue by advancing a compression member distally along a first portion of a closure track that extends from a proximal end to a distal end of at least one of the first and second jaw members;

applying at least a second compression force that is different than the first compression force to the tissue by advancing the compression member along a second portion of the closure track; and

applying the first compressive force to tissue by advancing the compression member along a third portion of the closure track positioned distally of the second portion of the closure track.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein applying the first compression force also moves the first and second jaw members from an open position to a substantially closed position.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first compression force is applied before the second compression force.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third portion of the closure track extends between a distal end of at least one of the first and second jaw members and a distal end of the second portion of the closure track.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second portion of the closure track includes at least one sloped or curved portion such that the at least second compression force applied to the tissue is varied as the compression member is advanced along the second portion of the closure track.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising delivering energy into the tissue from at least one electrode coupled to the end effector.

16. A surgical end effector, comprising:

first and second jaw members movable relative to one another between an open position and a closed position to clamp tissue therebetween;

a first closure track formed in the first jaw member and extending along a length thereof;

a second closure track formed in the second jaw member and extending along a length thereof; and

a compression member configured to translate longitudinally along a length of the end effector such that a first portion of the compression member contacts the first closure track and a second portion of the compression member contacts the second closure track to apply a compression force to tissue as the compression member is advanced towards a distal end of the end effector;

wherein the first closure track includes at least one sloped or curved portion such that, when the first and second jaw members are in the closed position, a distance between the first closure track and the second closure track varies along a length of the end effector;

wherein the first closure track further includes a closure ramp at a proximal end thereof configured to move the first and second jaw members from the open position to a substantially closed position, and wherein the at least one sloped or curved portion is disposed distal to the closure ramp.

17. The end effector of claim 16 , wherein the distance between the first closure track and the second closure track at a proximal end of the at least one sloped or curved portion is less than the distance between the first closure track and the second closure track at a distal end of the closure ramp.

18. The end effector of claim 16 , wherein the first closure track includes a full close ridge disposed at a distal end of the closure ramp, the compression member being configured to bring the first jaw member and the second jaw member to the closed position when advancing through the full close ridge.

19. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein the full close ridge is positioned between the closure ramp and the at least one sloped or curved portion.

20. The end effector of claim 16 , wherein the first closure track further includes a flat portion at a distal end of the first jaw member, and wherein the at least one sloped or curved portion is disposed proximal to the flat portion.
