Abstract

A method of manufacturing an electrowetting device including forming a cavity between first and second support plates which narrows towards a constriction. The cavity is at least partly filled with second fluid to provide a reservoir for dispensing second fluid between the first and second support plates.

Claims (91)

1. A method of manufacturing an electrowetting device comprising a first fluid and a second fluid, the method comprising:

providing a first support plate having a first support plate surface;

dispensing the first fluid on a first surface part of the first support plate surface;

providing a second support plate angled relative to the first support plate, to form a cavity between the first support plate and the second support plate which narrows towards a constriction between a first support plate part of the first support plate and a second support plate part of the second support plate;

at least partly filling the cavity with the second fluid; and

moving the first support plate and the second support plate towards the constriction to bring the first support plate and the second support plate closer together, to dispense, at the constriction, the second fluid between the first support plate and the second support plate.

2. The method according to claim 1 , comprising:

wrapping the first support plate at least partly around a first roller;

wrapping the second support plate at least partly around a second roller, the second roller positioned relative to the first roller to provide the constriction,

moving the first support plate over the first roller; and

moving the second support plate over the second roller.

3. The method according to claim 2 , comprising:

rotating the first roller in a first rotational direction; and

rotating the second roller in a second rotational direction opposite to the first rotational direction.

4. The method according to claim 1 , the moving the first support plate and the second support plate towards the constriction comprising:

feeding:

a first support plate sheet, dividable to form a plurality of first support plates, the plurality of first support plates comprising the first support plate, and

a second support plate sheet, dividable to form a plurality of second support plates, the plurality of second support plates comprising the second support plate,

respectively from:

a first position with a first distance between the first support plate sheet and the second support plate sheet, to

a second position, at the constriction, with a second distance between the first support plate sheet and the second support plate sheet, the first distance greater than the second distance.

5. The method according to claim 1 , comprising, after the moving the first support plate and the second support plate towards the constriction:

setting at the constriction a distance between the first support plate part and the second support plate part to substantially equal a distance between the first support plate and the second support plate of the electrowetting device to be manufactured.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the providing the second support plate angled relative to the first support plate is such that the cavity has a substantially V-shaped form,

a first angle of the first support plate relative to the second support plate being greater at a first position with a first distance between the first support plate and the second support plate than

a second angle of the first support plate relative to the second support plate at a second position, at the constriction, between the first support plate and the second support plate.

7. The method according to claim 1 , comprising, after the moving the first support plate and the second support plate towards the constriction:

moving the first support plate and the second support plate through the constriction, to dispense, at the constriction, the second fluid between the first support plate and the second support plate.

8. The method according to claim 1 , comprising:

providing the first fluid in part of the cavity, within a channel formed by the first surface part and an interface between the first fluid and the second fluid, the dispensing the first fluid on the first surface part comprising dispensing the first fluid on the first surface part by moving the first surface part along a side of the channel.

9. The method according to claim 8 , comprising controlling a thickness of a layer of the first fluid dispensed on the first surface part by controlling one or more of:

an angle of the first support plate relative to the channel,

a volume of the first fluid in the channel,

a volume of the second fluid in the cavity, or

a speed of the moving the first surface part along the side of the channel.

10. The method according to claim 8 , comprising:

providing a further first fluid in a further part of the cavity, within a further channel formed between a second surface part of a second support plate surface of the second support plate and the second fluid; and

dispensing the further first fluid on the second surface part by moving the second surface part along a side of the further channel.

11. The method according to claim 1 , the constriction being a first constriction, the method comprising:

providing the first fluid in part of the cavity, within a channel formed by:

the first surface part of a first part,

an interface between the first fluid and the second fluid, and

a further surface spaced from the first surface part, the further surface and the first surface part forming a second constriction, the dispensing the first fluid on the first surface part comprising dispensing the first fluid on the first surface part by moving the first surface part along a side of the channel.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the further surface is a roller surface of a third roller, the method comprising:

providing the first fluid onto the roller surface to form a layer of the first fluid on the roller surface; and

rotating the third roller to provide the first fluid from the roller surface into the channel.

13. The method according to claim 1 , comprising:

providing a further support plate angled relative to the second support plate, to form a further cavity between the second support plate and the further support plate which narrows towards a further constriction between the second support plate and the further support plate;

at least partly filling the further cavity with a further second fluid;

moving the second support plate and the further support plate towards the further constriction, to dispense, at the further constriction, the further second fluid between the second support plate and the further support plate.

14. The method according to claim 13 , comprising:

providing a further first fluid in part of the further cavity, within a further channel formed by:

a surface part of a surface of one of the second support plate or the further support plate, and

an interface between the further first fluid and the further second fluid; and

dispensing the further first fluid on the surface part by moving at least one of the second support plate or the further support plate along a side of the further channel.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein

the further first fluid is substantially electrically non-conductive; and

the further second fluid is at least one of electrically conductive or polar.

16. The method according to claim 13 , comprising:

wrapping the first support plate at least partly around a first roller;

wrapping the further support plate at least partly around a second roller, the second roller positioned relative to the first roller to provide the constriction and the further constriction;

moving the first support plate over the first roller; and

moving the further support plate over the second roller.

17. The method according to claim 13 , comprising:

dispensing a further sealing material on a further sealing material part of a further support plate surface of the further support plate before the further sealing material part reaches the further constriction during the moving the second support plate and the further support plate towards the constriction; and

coupling, at the further constriction, the second support plate with the further support plate by bringing the second support plate into contact with the further sealing material on the further sealing material part.

18. The method according to claim 13 , the further support plate comprising:

a further support plate substrate;

a further electrode;

a further dielectric layer; and

a further hydrophobic layer.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the further support plate is flexible.

20. The method according to claim 1 , comprising:

dispensing a sealing material on a sealing material part of a second support plate surface of the second support plate before the sealing material part reaches the constriction during the moving the first support plate and the second support plate towards the constriction; and

coupling, at the constriction, the first support plate with the second support plate by bringing the first support plate into contact with the sealing material on the sealing material part.

21. The method according to claim 1 , the first support plate comprising:

a first support plate substrate;

a first support plate electrode;

a first support plate dielectric layer; and

a first support plate hydrophobic layer.

22. The method according to claim 1 , the first support plate comprising walls surrounding a surface area of the first support plate.

23. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first support plate or the second support plate is flexible.

24. The method according to claim 1 , wherein

the first fluid is substantially electrically non-conductive; and

the second fluid is at least one of electrically conductive or polar.

25. The method according to claim 1 , the second support plate comprising a second support plate electrode.

26. The method according to claim 1 , the second support plate comprising:

a second support plate substrate;

a second support plate electrode;

a second support plate dielectric layer; and

a second support plate hydrophobic layer.
