Abstract

A network switch suitable for receiving packets of information from and the packets of information to a communications network includes a plurality of physical ports, packet processing functionality and memory. The packet processing functionality operates on information stored in memory to determine the LAG, from among two or more LAGs, over which a packet received by the switch should be correctly forwarded. The switch memory stores a plurality of LAG tables, each one of which can include one or more entries comprising a physical port number and a packet parameter that are used by the packet processing functionality to determinately identify the correct LAG over which to forward a packet.

Claims (44)

1. A packet forwarding system, comprising:

a physical port that is associated with a plurality of link aggregation groups (LAGs);

a packet processor coupled to the physical port; and

a memory coupled to the packet processor and including instructions that, when executed by the packet processor, cause the packet processor to:

receive a packet that includes a physical port identity of the physical port;

determine at least one packet parameter of the packet;

determine, using the physical port identity and the at least one packet parameter, a first LAG of the plurality of LAGs that are associated with the physical port; and

forward the packet over the physical port using the first LAG.

2. The packet network device of claim 1 , wherein the memory includes a LAG table that is associated with the physical port and that associates the at least one packet parameter with the first LAG, and wherein the packet processor uses the LAG table to determine the first LAG.

3. The packet network device of claim 1 , wherein the first LAG is associated with a first service, and wherein a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs is associated with a second service that is different than the first service.

4. The packet network device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one packet parameter includes at least one of a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity, a source Media Access Control (MAC) address, a destination MAC address, a source Internet Protocol (IP) address, and a destination IP address.

5. The packet network device of claim 1 , wherein the physical port is assigned a first virtual IP address and a first virtual MAC address that are associated with the first LAG, and wherein the physical port is assigned a second virtual IP address and a second virtual MAC address that are associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

6. The packet forwarding system of claim 1 , wherein the physical port is associated with a first VLAN that is associated with the first LAG, and wherein the physical port is associated with a second VLAN that is associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

7. A network, comprising:

a packet receiving device;

a packet forwarding device that is coupled to the packet receiving device by a plurality of link aggregation groups (LAGs), wherein the packet forwarding device is configured to:

receive a packet that includes a physical port identity;

determine at least one packet parameter of the packet;

determine, using the physical port identity and the at least one packet parameter, a first LAG of the plurality of LAGs; and

forward the packet using the first LAG.

8. The network of claim 7 , wherein the packet forwarding device includes a LAG table that associates the at least one packet parameter with the first LAG, and wherein the packet forwarding device uses the LAG table to determine the first LAG.

9. The network of claim 7 , wherein the packet receiving device provides a plurality of services that include a first service that is associated with the first LAG and a second service that is associated with the second LAG and that is different than the first service.

10. The network of claim 7 , wherein the at least one packet parameter includes at least one of a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity, a source Media Access Control (MAC) address, a destination MAC address, a source Internet Protocol (IP) address, and a destination IP address.

11. The network of claim 7 , wherein the packet forwarding device includes a physical port that is associated with each of the plurality of LAGs, and wherein the packet is forwarded over the physical port using the first LAG.

12. The network of claim 11 , wherein the physical port is assigned a first virtual IP address and a first virtual MAC address that are associated with the first LAG, and wherein the physical port is assigned a second virtual IP address and a second virtual MAC address that are associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

13. The network of claim 11 , wherein the physical port is associated with a first VLAN that is associated with the first LAG, and wherein the physical port is associated with a second VLAN that is associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

14. A method of forwarding a packet, comprising:

receiving, by a packet processor, a packet that includes a physical port identity of a physical port;

determining, by the packet processor, at least one packet parameter of the packet;

determining, by the packet processor using the physical port identity and the at least one packet parameter, a first LAG of a plurality of LAGs that are associated with the physical port; and

forwarding, by the packet processor, the packet over the physical port using the first LAG.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the determining the first LAG includes utilizing a LAG table that is associated with the physical port and that associates the at least one packet parameter with the first LAG.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

associating the first LAG with a first service; and

associating a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs with a second service that is different than the first service.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one packet parameter includes at least one of a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity, a source Media Access Control (MAC) address, a destination MAC address, a source Internet Protocol (IP) address, and a destination IP address.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

assigning the physical port a first virtual IP address and a first virtual MAC address that are associated with the first LAG; and

assigning the physical port a second virtual IP address and a second virtual MAC address that are associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

19. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

associating the physical port with a first VLAN that is associated with the first LAG; and

associating the physical port with a second VLAN that is associated with a second LAG of the plurality of LAGs.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

performing source suppression on the packet.
