Abstract

A method of preparing an EPDM roofing membrane panel, the method comprising preparing a vulcanizable composition including expandable graphite by mixing an EPDM rubber and expandable graphite, forming a sheet from said vulcanizable composition, preparing a green membrane panel using said sheet, and curing said green membrane panel to form the EPDM roofing membrane panel, where said steps of preparing a vulcanizable composition, said step of forming a sheet, said step of preparing a green membrane, an said step of curing each include a peak temperature at which each of said steps respectively take place, and where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature above said peak temperature of each respective step.

Claims (8)

1. A method of preparing an EPDM roofing membrane panel, the method comprising:

(i) preparing a first vulcanizable composition that excludes expandable graphite by mixing an EPDM rubber at a first peak temperature;

(ii) preparing a second vulcanizable composition including expandable graphite by mixing an EPDM rubber and expandable graphite at a second peak temperature, where the expandable graphite has an onset temperature of at least 180° C., and wherein the second vulcanizable composition includes an EPDM blend that includes from about 2 to about 40 wt. % of an EPDM characterized by a Mooney viscosity (ML1+4@125° C.) of less than 60 with the balance of the EPDM blend includes an EPDM characterized by a Mooney viscosity (ML1+4@125° C.) of 60 or higher;

(iii) combining and mixing the first vulcanizable composition with the second vulcanizable composition and a cure system at a third peak temperature to form a combined vulcanizable composition;

(iv) forming a sheet from said combined vulcanizable composition;

(v) preparing a green membrane panel using said sheet; and

(vi) curing said green membrane panel to form the EPDM roofing membrane panel, where said first peak temperature is higher than said second peak temperature and said second peak temperature is higher than said third peak temperature, where the first vulcanizable composition includes a first EPDM and where the second vulcanizable composition includes a second EPDM, and where the Mooney viscosity (ML 1+4 @125° C.) of the second EPDM is lower than the Mooney viscosity (ML 1+4 @125° C.) of the first EPDM.

2. The method of claim 1 , where the EPDM rubber used to prepare the first vulcanizable composition is characterized by a Mooney viscosity (ML 1+4 @125° C.) of 60 or higher.
