Abstract

An orthosis configured to stretch tissue around a toe of a patient and methods for using the same are provided. The orthosis includes a foot plate, a toe assembly and a drive assembly. The toe assembly can include a first member including a first extension member and a second member including a second extension member. The drive assembly can move the second member with respect to the first member.

Claims (18)

1. A toe orthosis, comprising:

a foot plate configured to couple a foot of a user thereto,

a toe cuff sized and shaped to engage a toe of the user, and

a gearing mechanism that rotates the toe cuff with respect to the footplate and a drive assembly configured to drive movement of the toe cuff relative to the foot plate such that the toe cuff imparts movement of the toe of the user during use of the toe orthosis, wherein the drive assembly includes a knob configured for manual operation to impart movement of the toe cuff relative to the foot plate.

2. The toe orthosis of claim 1 , wherein the toe cuff is rotatable with respect to the foot plate about an axis of rotation.

3. The toe orthosis of claim 1 , further comprising an attachment bracket operatively connecting the toe cuff to the foot plate.

4. The toe orthosis of claim 3 , wherein the attachment bracket includes a toe rod.

5. The toe orthosis of claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly includes a worm gear operatively connected to the knob.

6. A method of stretching a toe joint, the method comprising:

coupling a foot of a user to a foot plate of a toe orthosis;

engaging a toe of the user with a toe cuff of the toe orthosis; and

a drive assembly including a gearing mechanism that rotates the toe cuff with respect to the foot plate and a knob, and

manually rotating the knob of the toe orthosis to impart movement of the toe cuff relative to the foot plate, thereby rotating the toe about the toe joint.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said coupling a foot of a user to a foot plate comprises fastening the foot of the user to the foot plate using at least one retaining device.

8. The toe orthosis of claim 1 , wherein the knob is rotatable to impart movement of the toe cuff relative to the foot plate.

9. The toe orthosis of claim 8 , wherein the drive assembly includes a drive shaft operatively connected to the knob.

10. The toe orthosis of claim 9 , wherein the drive assembly includes the gearing mechanism operatively connected to the drive shaft and the toe cuff for transmitting torque from the knob and the drive shaft to the toe cuff.

11. The toe orthosis of claim 10 , wherein the gearing mechanism is a worm gear.
