Abstract

A dispersed storage unit includes a physical memory and a storage unit control module. The physical memory is transferred to a receiving dispersed storage unit from a transferring dispersed storage unit, which used the transferred physical memory to store encoded data slices prior to the at least one physical memory being transferred. The encoded data slices stored on the transferred physical memory have addresses falling within a first address range. The storage control unit is configured to detect installation of the transferred physical memory, and to notify a dispersed storage network that data slices within the first address range are to be received by and retrieved from the receiving dispersed storage unit.

Claims (57)

1. A dispersed storage unit for use in a dispersed storage network (DSN), the dispersed storage unit comprising:

at least one physical memory transferred from another dispersed storage unit, wherein the other dispersed storage unit stored encoded data slices on the at least one physical memory prior to the at least one physical memory being transferred to the dispersed storage unit, the stored encoded data slices having addresses falling within a first address range;

a storage unit control module configured to:

detect installation of the at least one physical memory; and

notify the dispersed storage network that data slices within the first address range are to be received by the dispersed storage unit.

2. The dispersed storage unit of claim 1 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

create and maintain a local, virtual DSN address to physical memory table.

3. The dispersed storage unit of claim 1 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

send a configuration update message to a dispersed storage processing unit that manages the dispersed storage unit and the other dispersed storage unit.

4. The dispersed storage unit of claim 3 , where the configuration update message includes an indication of which pillars are stored in the at least one physical memory.

5. The dispersed storage unit of claim 1 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

distribute a read threshold number of the encoded data slices across a plurality of physical memories, including the at least one physical memory.

6. The dispersed storage unit of claim 5 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

store at least one additional encoded data slice in a physical memory included in the other dispersed storage unit.

7. The dispersed storage unit of claim 1 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect installation based on a configuration message from a DS managing unit.

8. The dispersed storage unit of claim 1 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect installation based on a query of the at least one physical memory.

9. A dispersed storage unit for use in a dispersed storage network (DSN), the dispersed storage unit comprising:

a plurality of physical memories arranged in a memory configuration;

a storage unit control module configured to:

store and retrieve data objects having dispersed storage network addresses in a particular range of dispersed storage network addresses, wherein the data objects are stored to and retrieved from particular physical memories in the memory configuration;

detect a physical change in the memory configuration resulting in a changed range of dispersed storage network addresses for which the storage unit control module is configured to store and retrieve the data objects;

in response to detecting the physical change in the memory configuration:

notify at least one other device in the dispersed storage network about the change in the dispersed storage network addresses the storage unit control module is configured to store and receive; and

store and retrieve the data objects having dispersed storage network addresses in the changed range of dispersed storage network addresses.

10. The dispersed storage unit of claim 9 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect the physical change in the memory configuration by determining that one of the plurality of physical memories has been removed.

11. The dispersed storage unit of claim 9 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect a physical change in the memory configuration by determining that a new physical memory has been added to the plurality of physical memories.

12. The dispersed storage unit of claim 11 , wherein:

the new physical memory includes at least one physical memory transferred from another dispersed storage unit; and

the other dispersed storage unit stored encoded data slices on the at least one physical memory prior to the at least one physical memory being transferred to the dispersed storage unit.

13. The dispersed storage unit of claim 9 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

create and maintain a local virtual DSN address to physical memory table.

14. The dispersed storage unit of claim 9 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

send a configuration update message to a dispersed storage processing unit that manages the dispersed storage unit, and wherein the configuration update message includes an indication of which pillars are stored in the plurality of physical memories.

15. The dispersed storage unit of claim 9 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect the physical change in the memory configuration based on a query of the plurality of physical memories.

16. A dispersed storage network (DSN) comprising:

a distributed storage processing unit;

a plurality of dispersed storage units, at least one of the plurality of dispersed storage units including a storage unit control module and a plurality of physically transferrable memories arranged in a memory configuration;

the storage unit control module included in the at least one of the plurality of dispersed storage units configured to:

store and retrieve data objects having dispersed storage network addresses in a particular range of dispersed storage network addresses, wherein the data objects are stored to and retrieved from particular physical memories in the memory configuration;

detect a physical change in the memory configuration resulting in a changed range of dispersed storage network addresses for which the storage unit control module is configured to store and retrieve data objects; and

in response to detecting the physical change in the memory configuration notify at least one other device in the dispersed storage network about the change in the dispersed storage network addresses the storage unit control module is configured to store and receive.

17. A dispersed storage network of claim 16 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect a physical change in the memory configuration by determining that one of the plurality of physically transferrable memories has been removed.

18. A dispersed storage network of claim 16 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

detect a physical change in the memory configuration by determining that a new physically transferrable memory has been added to the plurality of physically transferrable memories.

19. A dispersed storage network of claim 18 , wherein:

the new physical memory includes at least one physical memory transferred from another dispersed storage unit; and

the other dispersed storage unit stored encoded data slices on the at least one physical memory prior to the at least one physical memory being transferred to the dispersed storage unit.

20. A dispersed storage network of claim 16 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:

create and maintain a local virtual DSN address to physical memory table.

21. A dispersed storage network of claim 16 , wherein the storage unit control module is further configured to:
