Abstract

Embodiments provide physiological measurement systems, devices and methods for continuous health and fitness monitoring. A wearable strap may detect reflected light from a user's skin, where data corresponding to the reflected light is used to automatically and continually determine a heart rate of the user. The wearable strap may monitor heart rate data including heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and sleep quality. The systems may include a processing module that generates an indicator of physical recovery based on the heart rate data. The recovery indicator may be used to determine strain related to an exercise routine, qualitative information on the user's health, whether to alter a user's exercise plan, and so forth.

Claims (39)

1. A system comprising:

a remote server;

a wearable strap, the wearable strap couplable to an appendage of a user, the wearable strap including one or more light emitters for emitting light toward a user's skin, one or more light detectors for receiving light from the one or more light emitters reflected from the user's skin, a memory, and a processor; and

a user device configured to receive a data transmission wirelessly from the wearable strap when in proximity thereto, and to stream physiological data from the wearable strap to the remote server, the user device further configured to download processed data from the remote server for display;

wherein the processor of the wearable strap is configured by computer executable instructions stored in the memory and executable by the processor to continuously monitor data from the one or more light detectors of the wearable strap and to transmit the continuously monitored data to the user device for upload to the remote server;

wherein the remote server is configured by second computer executable instructions stored in a second memory and executable by a second processor of the remote server to receive the continuously monitored data and to:

calculate continuous heart rate data based on the continuously monitored data;

determine, at least daily, a resting heart rate for the user based on an analysis of the continuous heart rate data acquired by monitoring data from the wearable strap;

calculate a heart rate variability based on the continuous heart rate data;

convert a time series of heart rate data into a time series of heart rate reserve data based on the resting heart rate derived from the continuous heart rate data;

automatically detect exercise activity of the user;

generate an intensity score that provides a quantitative assessment of an intensity of the exercise activity using a weighted sum of heart rate reserve data from the time series of heart rate reserve data during the exercise activity;

automatically detect a physical recovery state of the user during which the user is sleeping based on continuous data collected by the wearable, continuous-monitoring physiological measurement system;

calculate a sleep quality indicator indicative of a duration and efficiency of sleep by the user; and

generate a recovery indicator that provides a quantitative assessment of the physical recovery state of the user indicating whether the user is recovered and ready for exercise based on a weighted combination of the heart rate variability, the resting heart rate, the intensity score, and the sleep quality indicator; and

wherein the user device is configured to retrieve from the remote server and display, within a user interface rendered on the user device, the recovery indicator.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sleep quality indicator is determined using one or more of: a duration of sleep, a level of movement of the user during sleep, and a number of times the user wakes up during sleep.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user device is further configured to display, in the user interface, qualitative information on a user's health corresponding to the recovery indicator.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the qualitative information on the user's health comprises one or more of:

an indication of whether the user has physically recovered from an exercise routine;

an indication of whether the user has psychologically recovered from an exercise routine;

an indication of whether the user requires rest;

an indication of whether the user is prepared for future activity; and

an indication of one or more future alterations to an exercise routine that should be implemented based on one or more health-related goals of the user.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the remote server is further configured to:

based on the recovery indicator, automatically alter an exercise plan according to one or more health goals of the user; and

transmit to the user device for display, in the user interface of the user device, the altered exercise plan.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the strap includes one or more slots for removably coupling batteries to the strap.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the strap includes a storage device for storing heart rate data.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the strap includes a wireless transmitter for transmitting heart rate data to the user device.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the strap includes a motion sensor for detecting a motion of the user.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor and the remote server are configured to determine the resting heart rate for the user based at least in part on analyzing moving averages for the resting heart rate to distinguish changes from normal fluctuations.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user device includes a cell phone.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user device includes a computer.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote server determines the resting heart rate as a moving average of resting heart rates.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote server determines the resting heart rate using a smoothing operation to distinguish changes from normal fluctuations.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the intensity score is customized for the user to account for day-to-day physiological variations in the resting heart rate.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable strap is in proximity to the user device when the wearable strap connect in a communicating relationship with the user device using Bluetooth communications.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable strap is in proximity to the user device when the wearable strap can connect in a communicating relationship with the user device using a short range wireless communication protocol.
