Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus for generating at least one user adjustable, accurate, real-time, virtual surgical reference indicium including data for making at least one limbal and/or corneal relaxing incision for use in astigmatism correcting procedures are disclosed. An example method includes providing at least one real-time multidimensional visualization of at least a portion of an eye to a surgeon and producing at least one rotationally accurate virtual indicium including data for making at least one limbal relaxing incision, at least one corneal relaxing incision or a combination thereof on the eye in conjunction with the real-time multidimensional visualization of at least a portion of the eye.

Claims (38)

1. A machine-accessible device having instructions stored thereon that are configured, when executed, to cause a machine to at least:

generate at a first time a first multidimensional visualization of at least a portion of an eye to guide a user to perform an astigmatism correction procedure on the eye;

align a pre-operative still image of the at least a portion of the eye with the first multidimensional visualization such that the pre-operative still image and the first multidimensional visualization are rotationally accurate;

generate a virtual indicium that includes data for guiding the astigmatism correction procedure;

integrate the virtual indicium within the first multidimensional visualization such that the virtual indicium is rotationally accurate with respect to the eye at the first time; and

generate at a second time a second multidimensional visualization of the at least a portion of the eye by adjusting for movement of the at least a portion of the eye after the first time;

integrate the virtual indicium within the second multidimensional visualization such that the virtual indicium is rotationally accurate with respect to the eye at the second time; and

display the first multidimensional visualization after the first time and the second multidimensional visualization after the second time; and display portions of the virtual indicium at one or more desired depths with respect to the display of the first multidimensional visualization after the first time and the second multidimensional visualization after the second time, wherein at least one of the first multidimensional visualization, the pre-operative still image, the virtual indicium, and the second multidimensional visualization is stereoscopic.

2. The machine-accessible device of claim 1 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to align the pre-operative still image of the at least a portion of the eye with the second multidimensional visualization such that the pre-operative still image and the second multidimensional visualization are rotationally accurate.

3. The machine-accessible device of claim 2 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to:

determine a specific visual feature of the eye; and

align the specific visual feature of the eye included within the pre-operative still image with the specific visual feature of the eye included within at least one of the first multidimensional visualization and the second multidimensional visualization.

4. The machine-accessible device of claim 1 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to:

record the pre-operative still image under at least one of a natural dilation and chemical dilation while a patient associated with the eye is in an upright and level position; and

generate at least one of the first multidimensional visualization and the second multidimensional visualization while the patient is in a supine position.

5. The machine-accessible device of claim 1 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to generate the second multidimensional visualization at the second time after the eye has cyclorotated.

6. The machine-accessible device of claim 1 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to display the virtual indicium as a graphical representation of at least one of:

a) a size of components of the eye;

b) a shape of components of the eye;

c) an optical characteristic of the eye;

d) a magnitude of the astigmatism of the eye;

e) a direction of the astigmatism of the eye;

f) an angular gradation marking;

g) a cross-hatch marking showing the vertical axis of the eye;

h) a visual axis of the eye;

i) a diameter of a limbus of the eye;

j) a diameter of a pupil of the eye;

k) a residual astigmatism of the eye;

l) a steep meridian of the astigmatism of the eye;

m) a flat meridian of the astigmatism of the eye;

n) a gradation from the vertical axis of the eye;

o) a gradation from a horizontal axis of the eye;

p) a direction of an incision; and

q) an order of at least two incisions.

7. The machine-accessible device of claim 1 , further comprising instructions stored thereon that are configured when executed to cause the machine to:

receive an instruction from a user to adjust the virtual indicium;

update the virtual indicium based on the instruction from the user;

display the updated virtual indicium in conjunction with at least one of the first multidimensional visualization and the second multidimensional visualization.
