Facet arthroplasty devices and methods
View Patent ↗A prosthesis replaces all or a portion of a natural facet joint on a vertebral body. The prosthesis has a prosthesis body accommodating fixation to the vertebral body at or near a pedicle and without support by a lamina. The prosthesis body has a fastening element installed within the vertebral body at or near a pedicle. The prosthesis further has an artificial facet joint structure carried by the prosthesis body at a location spaced from the fastening element. The artificial facet joint structure is adapted and configured to replace all or a portion of a natural facet joint.
1. A surgical method comprising:
inserting a prosthetic assembly into a body of a patient; and
attaching the prosthetic assembly onto a vertebral body within the patient, wherein the prosthetic assembly comprises:
a first link body having a first opening extending therethrough, wherein the first opening is sized and configured to have a spinous process fit therethrough; and
a second link body having a second opening extending therethrough, wherein the first link body and the second link body are joined such that the first opening overlaps with the second opening.
2. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the first opening in the first link body has an enclosed perimeter.
3. The surgical method of claim 2 , wherein the second opening in the second link body has an enclosed perimeter.
4. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the first link body includes a key that nests within an opening in the second link body.
5. The surgical method of claim 4 , wherein the key is octagonal in shape.
6. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein an upper section of the first link body is in the form of a cup.
7. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein a stem extends outwardly from the first link body.
8. The surgical method of claim 7 , wherein the stem is sized and configured to fit within a pedicle of the patient.
9. The surgical method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching the prosthetic assembly onto a vertebral body as part of a multiple level procedure across two or more levels of the spine.
10. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic assembly is sized and configured to replace a portion of a facet joint.
