Abstract

A fuel system that in at least some implementations includes a carburetor having a fluid passage, a solenoid, a valve, a driver circuit and a control circuit. The valve may be moved by the solenoid between an open position permitting fluid flow through the fluid passage and a closed position at least partially inhibiting fluid flow through the fluid passage. The driver circuit and control circuit are communicated with the solenoid to contribute to providing power to the solenoid and controlling actuation of the solenoid. The driver circuit and control circuit provide a first magnitude of power to the solenoid to initially change the solenoid from its closed position to its open position and a second magnitude of power to maintain the solenoid in its open position wherein the second magnitude of power is less than the first magnitude.

Claims (27)

1. A fuel system, comprising:

a carburetor having a fluid passage;

a solenoid;

a valve moved by the solenoid between an open position permitting fluid flow through the fluid passage and a closed position at least partially inhibiting fluid flow through the fluid passage; and

a driver circuit communicated with the solenoid to contribute to providing power to the solenoid and controlling actuation of the solenoid;

the driver circuit and a control circuit provide a first magnitude of power to the solenoid to initially change the valve from its closed position to its open position and a second magnitude of power to the solenoid to maintain the valve in its open position wherein the second magnitude of power is less than the first magnitude of power; and

the control circuit provides a first pulse width modified (PWM) profile with a duty cycle greater than 50% corresponding to the first magnitude of power and a second PWM profile with a duty cycle less than 50% corresponding to the second magnitude of power.

The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the solenoid includes an armature that is biased to a first position corresponding to the closed position of the valve and the armature is moved to a second position corresponding to the open position of the valve when the first magnitude of power is supplied to the solenoid.

3. The fuel system of claim 2 , wherein the armature is maintained spaced from the first position when the second magnitude of power is supplied to the solenoid after the armature is moved from its first position.

4. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to provide at least one modulated voltage to the solenoid while maintaining the solenoid in an energized position.

5. The fuel system of claim 4 , wherein the at least one modulated voltage is a digital signal processing voltage of approximately 0V or a voltage greater than 0V.

6. The fuel system of claim 1 , further comprising a regulator circuit for regulating power from a power source, the regulator circuit being coupled to the control circuit.

7. The fuel system of claim 6 , wherein a waveform of at least one of the PWM profiles has a frequency of at least 10 kHz.

8. The fuel system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit provides the first PWM profile with a duty cycle between 70-100% corresponding to the first magnitude of power and the second PWM profile with a duty cycle between 10-30% corresponding to the second magnitude of power.

9. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit includes at least one integrated circuit timer.

10. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein providing the second magnitude of power minimizes a dissipated heat of the solenoid by approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

11. A fuel system, comprising:

a carburetor having a fluid passage;

a solenoid;

a valve moved by the solenoid between an open position permitting fluid flow through the fluid passage and a closed position at least partially inhibiting fluid flow through the fluid passage;

a driver circuit and a control circuit that are communicated with the solenoid to contribute to providing power to the solenoid and controlling actuation of the solenoid, wherein the driver circuit and control circuit provide a first magnitude of power to the solenoid to initially change the solenoid from its closed position to its open position and a second magnitude of power to maintain the solenoid in its open position wherein the second magnitude of power is less than the first magnitude of power; and

the control circuit is configured for pulse width modulation (PWM) and provides at least two PWM profiles, a first PWM profile having a duty cycle greater than 50% corresponding to the first magnitude of power and a second PWM profile having a duty cycle of less than 50% corresponding to the second magnitude of power.

12. The fuel system of claim 11 , wherein a PWM waveform has a frequency of at least 10 kHz.

13. The fuel system of claim 11 , wherein the second PWM profile has a duty cycle between 10%-30% corresponding to the second magnitude of power.

14. The fuel system of claim 11 , wherein the second PWM profile decreases the dissipated heat of the solenoid by an average temperature of at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit compared to the average temperature of the dissipated heat of the solenoid if operated with only a first PWM profile having a duty cycle of 100%.

15. The fuel system of claim 11 , wherein the first PWM profile has a duty cycle between 70-100% corresponding to the first magnitude of power.

16. The fuel system of claim 11 , wherein a waveform of the duty cycle of at least one of the first and second PWM profiles has a frequency of at least 25 kHz.
