Abstract

A method for encoding a carrier signal in a video signal, the video signal having one or more frames, the frames each having a first field and a second field, the first field and the second field of each frame having a plurality of scan lines, each having a plurality of pixels with an intensity value indicating brightness, the method comprising selectively designating the plurality of scan lines of the first field of the one or more frames as up lines or down lines, calculating an optimum amount of adjustment to the pixels of the up lines and the down lines, and selectively increasing the intensity value of pixels of the up lines and decreasing the intensity value of pixels of the down lines by the optimum amount of adjustment thereby modulating the video signal with a carrier signal and creating a modulated video signal.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

examining intensities of a modulated video signal received from a broadcast source, the modulated video signal having plural frames and a carrier signal encoded therein, the carrier signal being unnoticeable to a human viewer of the modulated video signal;

identifying the carrier signal encoded within the modulated video signals by detecting a change in the intensities in the modulated video signal; and

creating a carrier indicator indicating one or more of a presence or an absence of the carrier signal in the modulated video signal based on the change in intensities that is detected.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carrier signal is identified by detecting the change in the intensities of pixels in the modulated video signal.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the intensities of the pixels represent brightness of the pixels in the modulated video signal.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising detecting a temporal edge displayed in the modulated video signal by examining changes in the intensities of a first pixel among several frames of the frames in the modulated video signal.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein identifying the carrier signal includes comparing the intensities of neighboring pixels of the pixels in the modulated video signal.

6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising detecting a spatial edge displayed in the modulated video signal by comparing the intensities of neighboring pixels of the pixels in the modulated video signal in a common frame of the modulated video signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing the carrier signal from the modulated video signal to create a decoded video by reducing the change in intensities in the modulated video signal.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the intensities is detected by examining the intensities of the modulated video signal among multiple, different frames of the modulated video signal over a designated time interval.

9. A decoder device comprising:

one or more detector processors configured to examine intensities of a modulated video signal received from a broadcast source, the modulated video signal having plural frames and a carrier signal encoded therein, the carrier signal being unnoticeable to a human viewer of the modulated video signal,

wherein the one or more detector processors also are configured to identify the carrier signal encoded within the modulated video signals by detecting a change in the intensities in the modulated video signal, and

wherein the one or more detector processors also are configured to create a carrier indicator indicative of one or more of a presence or an absence of the carrier signal in the modulated video signal based on the change in intensities that is detected.

10. The decoder device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more detector processors are configured to identify the carrier signal by detecting the change in the intensities of pixels in the modulated video signal.

11. The decoder device of claim 10 , wherein the intensities of the pixels represent brightness of the pixels in the modulated video signal.

12. The decoder device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more detector processors also are configured to detect a temporal edge displayed in the modulated video signal by examining changes in the intensities of a first pixel among several frames of the frames in the modulated video signal.

13. The decoder device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more detector processors are configured to identify the carrier signal by comparing the intensities of neighboring pixels of the pixels in the modulated video signal.

14. The decoder device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more detector processors are configured to detect a spatial edge displayed in the modulated video signal by comparing the intensities of neighboring pixels of the pixels in the modulated video signal in a common frame of the modulated video signal.

15. The decoder device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more detector processors are configured to remove the carrier signal from the modulated video signal to create a decoded video by reducing the change in intensities in the modulated video signal.

16. The decoder device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more detector processors are configured to detect the change in the intensities by examining the intensities of the modulated video signal among multiple, different frames of the modulated video signal over a designated time interval.

17. An encoding device comprising:

an input configured to receive a video signal from a signal source, the video signal including plural frames having pixels with intensities for representing one or more of an image or a video; and

one or more processors configured generate a modulated video signal based on the video signal, the one or more processors configured to select portions of the pixels in one or more frames of the video signal and to change intensities of the pixels from designated intensities of the pixels in the video signal to modified intensities of the pixels in the modulated video signal, wherein the one or more processors are configured to encode a carrier signal in the modulated video signal by changing the intensities of the pixels without the carrier signal being noticeable to a human viewer of the modulated video signal during display of the modulated video signal.

18. The encoding device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to communicate the modulated video signal to a broadcast source that broadcasts the modulated video signal to one or more display devices.

19. The encoding device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to change the intensities of the pixels by different amounts within one or more common frames of the video signal.

20. The encoding device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to identify a temporal edge displayed in the video signal by comparing the designated intensity associated with a first pixel in the pixels across several frames of the frames in the video signal.
