Abstract

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a device for initiating a first multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication session with a first base station utilizing a first portion of spectrum of an antenna system, detecting a need for additional communications bandwidth, and initiating a second MIMO communication session with a second base station utilizing a second portion of spectrum of the antenna system. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (37)

1 . A method, comprising:

initiating, by a communication device comprising a processor, a first multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication session with a primary cell utilizing a first communications band;

detecting, by the communication device, a need for additional communications bandwidth;

initiating, by the communication device, a second MIMO communication session with a secondary cell utilizing a second communications band;

wherein the first MIMO communication session and the second MIMO communication session occur simultaneously;

wherein the communication device utilizes a plurality of antennas having a reduced radio frequency (RF) signal correlation between antenna ports coupled thereto; and

wherein each of the plurality of antennas operate in the first communications band and the second communications band.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the primary cell comprises a first communication system.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secondary cell comprises a second communication system.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the need for additional communication bandwidth is responsive to a software application initiated by the communication device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the need for additional communication bandwidth is responsive to an increased demand for data by the communication device.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising initiating a termination of the second MIMO communication session responsive to a reduction in the demand for data by the communication device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication device engages in the first MIMO communication session with a first base station, wherein the communication device engages in the second MIMO communication session with a second base station.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein each of the first base station and the second base station comprise one of a macro cellular base station, a small cellular base station, a micro cellular base station, a pico base station, a femto base station, or a wireless access network, and wherein the communication device comprises a portable computer, a tablet, or a mobile phone.

9 . A machine-readable storage device, comprising instructions, wherein responsive to the instructions being executed by a processor, the processor performs operations comprising:

initiating a first multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication session with a primary cell utilizing a first portion of spectrum of an antenna system;

detecting a need for additional communications bandwidth;

initiating a second MIMO communication session with a secondary cell utilizing a second portion of spectrum of the antenna system;

wherein the first MIMO communication session and the second MIMO communication session occur simultaneously; and

wherein the antenna system comprises a plurality of antennas having a reduced radio frequency (RF) signal correlation between antenna ports coupled thereto.

11 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of antennas operate in the first portion of spectrum and the second portion of spectrum.

12 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein the primary cell comprises a first communication system, and wherein the secondary cell comprises a second communication system.

13 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein the need for additional communication bandwidth is responsive to an increased demand for data by the communication device.

14 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise initiating a termination of one of the first MIMO communication session or the second MIMO communication session responsive to a reduction in the demand for data by the communication device.

15 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein each of the primary cell and the secondary cell comprise one of a macro cellular base station, a small cellular base station, a micro cellular base station, a pico base station, a femto base station, or a wireless access network.

16 . The machine-readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein the antenna system is utilized by a communication device, and wherein the communication device comprises a portable computer, a tablet, or a mobile phone.

17 . A communication device, comprising:

an antenna system;

a memory to store instructions; and

a processor coupled to the memory and the antenna system, wherein responsive to executing the instructions the processor performs operations comprising:

initiating a first multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication session with a first base station utilizing a first portion of spectrum of an antenna system;

detecting a need for additional communications bandwidth;

initiating a second MIMO communication session with a second base station utilizing a second portion of spectrum of the antenna system; and

wherein the first MIMO communication session and the second MIMO communication session occur simultaneously.

18 . The communication device of claim 17 , wherein the detecting the need for additional communication bandwidth is responsive to receiving a request for data resources from a software application being executed by the communication device.

19 . The communication device of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise facilitating a termination of one of the first MIMO communication session or the second MIMO communication session responsive to a reduction in the demand for data by the communication device.

20 . The communication device of claim 17 , wherein each of the first base station and the second base station comprise one of a macro cellular base station, a small cellular base station, a micro cellular base station, a pico base station, a femto base station, or a wireless access network.
