Abstract

A wrappable protective sleeve for providing protection to an elongate member contained therein and method of construction thereof is provided. The sleeve includes a textile wall having opposite edges extending lengthwise along a longitudinal axis between opposite ends. The edges are wrappable to overlap one another to form an enclosed cavity. At least one reinforcement rib extends along at least a portion of the wall. The at least one reinforcement rib is formed of material fused and bonded on and/or in the wall.

Claims (32)

. A wrappable protective sleeve for providing protection to an elongate member contained therein, comprising:

a wall having opposite edges extending lengthwise along a longitudinal axis between opposite ends, said edges being wrappable to overlap one another to form an enclosed cavity; and

at least one reinforcement rib extending along at least a portion of said wall, said at least one reinforcement rib being fused and bonded on said wall.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said textile wall is constructed of a first type of material and said at least one reinforcement rib is fused from a second type of material, said first and second types of material being different from one another.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said textile wall is constructed of a first type of material and said at least one reinforcement rib is fused from a second type of material, said first and second types of material being the same.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said textile wall is a nonwoven material.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 4 wherein said at least one reinforcement rib is fused in the material of said nonwoven material.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 4 wherein said nonwoven material is non-heat-settable and said at least one reinforcement rib is heat-set to bias said opposite edges into overlapping relation with one another.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcement rib is formed as a plurality of discrete reinforcement ribs.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 7 wherein said plurality of discrete reinforcement ribs extend substantially transversely to said longitudinal axis.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 8 wherein said reinforcement ribs are heat-set to bias said opposite edges into overlapping relation with one another.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcement rib is formed as a single, continuous reinforcement rib.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 10 wherein said reinforcement rib extends over a serpentine path between said opposite ends.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 11 wherein said reinforcement rib has a plurality of widthwise extending portions extending substantially transversely to said longitudinal axis, adjacent ones of said widthwise extending portions being interconnected with one another by lengthwise extending portions of said reinforcement rib extending substantially parallel to said longitudinal axis.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 12 wherein said widthwise extending portions of said reinforcement rib are heat-set to bias said opposite edges into overlapping relation with one another.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcement rib is asymmetrical.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 14 wherein said at least one reinforcement rib forms a plurality of axially spaced first regions having a first density and a plurality of axially spaced second regions having a second density greater than said first density, said first regions and said second regions alternating with one another along said longitudinal axis.

. The wrappable protective sleeve of claim 1 wherein said textile wall is one of a woven, knit or braided material.

. A method of constructing a wrappable protective sleeve for protecting an elongate member contained therein, comprising:

forming a textile wall having opposite edges extending lengthwise along a longitudinal axis between opposite ends with the opposite edges; and

melting and solidifying at least one reinforcement rib on said wall, said at least one reinforcement rib having an increased rigidity relative to said wall.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the wall from a first type of material and forming the at least one reinforcement rib from a second type of material, wherein the first and second types of material are different from one another.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the wall from a first type of material and forming the at least one reinforcement rib from a second type of material, wherein the first and second types of material are the same.

. The method of claim 19 further including forming the at one reinforcement rib from fused material of the wall.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the at least one reinforcement rib as a plurality of discrete reinforcement ribs.

. The method of claim 21 further including forming the plurality of discrete reinforcement ribs extending substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the at least one reinforcement rib is formed as a single reinforcement rib.

. The method of claim 23 further including forming the reinforcement rib extending over a serpentine path between the opposite ends.

. The method of claim 24 further including forming the reinforcement rib having a plurality of widthwise extending portions extending substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis and interconnecting the widthwise extending portions to one another by a plurality of lengthwise extending portions extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the at least one reinforcement rib being asymmetrical.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the wall as a nonwoven material.

. The method of claim 17 further including forming the wall as one of a woven, knit or braided material.
