Abstract

Method and apparatus for separating a target substance from a fluid or mixture. Capsules having a coating and stripping solvents encapsulated in the capsules are provided. The coating is permeable to the target substance. The capsules having a coating and stripping solvents encapsulated in the capsules are exposed to the fluid or mixture. The target substance migrates through the coating and is taken up by the stripping solvents. The target substance is separated from the fluid or mixture by driving off the target substance from the capsules.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide wherein the mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide forms an incoming gas stream that contains the carbon dioxide, comprising:

an inner plenum with a diverter;

a first microcapsule chamber located adjacent said inner plenum wherein said first microcapsule chamber and said inner plenum are separated by a first wall;

a second microcapsule chamber located adjacent said inner plenum wherein said second microcapsule chamber and said inner plenum are separated by a second wall;

a first outer plenum located adjacent said first microcapsule chamber, said first outer plenum having a first exit;

a second outer plenum located adjacent said second microcapsule chamber, said second outer plenum having a second exit;

a multiplicity of microcapsules wherein each microcapsule includes stripping material that absorbs the carbon dioxide and a coating surrounding said stripping material wherein said coating is permeable to the carbon dioxide, wherein said multiplicity of microcapsules form a microcapsule stream that is directed to said diverter and wherein said microcapsules from said microcapsule stream enter said first microcapsule chamber and forms a first microcapsule bed and wherein said microcapsules from said microcapsule stream enter said second microcapsule chamber and forms a second microcapsule bed;

a first microcapsule chamber wall between said first outer plenum and said first microcapsule chamber; and

a second microcapsule chamber wall between said second outer plenum and said second microcapsule chamber;

wherein the incoming gas stream that contains the carbon dioxide enters said inner plenum and proceeds through said first wall to said first microcapsule chamber and said first microcapsule bed with the carbon dioxide passing through said coating surrounding said stripping material and is taken up by said stripping material and the incoming gas stream passes through said first microcapsule chamber wall and exits through said first exit; and

wherein the incoming gas stream that contains the carbon dioxide enters said inner plenum and proceeds through said second wall to said second microcapsule chamber and said second microcapsule bed with the carbon dioxide passing through said coating surrounding said stripping material and is taken up by said stripping material and the incoming gas stream passes through said second microcapsule chamber wall and exits through said second exit.

2. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1

further comprising a first screw conveyer in said first microcapsule chamber and a second screw conveyer in said second microcapsule chamber.

3. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1 wherein said first wall has multiple first openings that are sized to prevent passage of said microcapsules and wherein said second wall has multiple second openings that are sized to prevent passage of said microcapsules.

4. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1 wherein said first microcapsule chamber wall has multiple first openings that are sized to prevent passage of said microcapsules and wherein said second microcapsule chamber wall has multiple second openings that are sized to prevent passage of said microcapsules.

5. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1 wherein said coating on said capsules surrounding said stripping material includes carbon fibers.

6. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1 wherein said coating on said capsules surrounding said stripping material includes nanotubes.

7. The apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide of claim 1 wherein said coating on said capsules surrounding said stripping material is made of polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon.

8. An apparatus for separating carbon dioxide from a mixture of flue gases that includes the carbon dioxide comprising:

an inner plenum;

a diverter;

a first microcapsule chamber located adjacent said inner plenum wherein said first microcapsule chamber and said inner plenum are separated by a first wall;

a second microcapsule chamber located adjacent said inner plenum wherein said second microcapsule chamber and said inner plenum are separated by a second wall;

a first outer plenum located adjacent said first microcapsule chamber, said first outer plenum having a first exit;

a second outer plenum located adjacent said second microcapsule chamber, said second outer plenum having a second exit;

a multiplicity of microcapsules wherein each microcapsule includes stripping material that has absorbed the carbon dioxide and a coating surrounding said stripping material wherein said coating is permeable to the carbon dioxide, wherein said multiplicity of microcapsules form a microcapsule stream that is directed to said diverter and wherein said microcapsules from said microcapsule stream enter said first microcapsule chamber and forms a first microcapsule bed and wherein said microcapsules from said microcapsule stream enter said second microcapsule chamber and forms a second microcapsule bed;

a first microcapsule chamber wall between said first outer plenum and said first microcapsule chamber;

a second microcapsule chamber wall between said second outer plenum and said second microcapsule chamber; and

an incoming gas stream that comprises steam;

wherein said incoming gas stream that comprises steam enters said inner plenum and proceeds through said first wall to said first microcapsule chamber and said first microcapsule bed and takes up said carbon dioxide in said microcapsules in said first microcapsule bed and the incoming gas stream passes through said first microcapsule chamber wall and exits through said first exit; and

wherein said incoming gas stream that comprises steam enters said inner plenum and proceeds through said second wall to said second microcapsule chamber and said second microcapsule bed and takes up said carbon dioxide in said microcapsules in said second microcapsule bed and the incoming gas stream passes through said second microcapsule chamber wall and exits through said second exit.
