Abstract

The present invention describes a system, devices and methods for percutaneous pedicle screw revision procedures. The present invention utilizes a tulip rod stub/connector adapted to be used to extend pedicle screw/rod constructs with minimal disruption to surrounding soft tissue and without having to remove existing hardware.

Claims (24)

1. A tulip rod stub-connector comprises:

a first rod engagement member;

a second existing rod engagement member;

an intermediate member connecting the first rod engagement member to the second existing rod engagement member; and

wherein the first rod engagement member, the first rod engagement member is rotatable 360 degrees about the intermediate member, and has a saddle or tulip wherein the intermediate member has a female socket for engaging a bulbous or spherical male end located on the first rod engagement member of the tulip, and wherein the female socket and male end when secured together or coupled provide a polyaxial tulip allowing the tulip to rotate and be oriented in multiple directions and the second existing rod engagement member has two movable pincers or jaws pinned together at a pivot pin to receive an existing rod when open and to pivotably move inwardly toward the other pincer or jaw toward an axis of the rod to a closed position to clamp the tulip rod stub-connector onto the existing rod wherein the second rod engagement member is positioned parallel and off-center or offset relative to a vertical longitudinal axis the first rod engagement member wherein the intermediate portion has a first intermediate portion aligned with a vertical axis and a second intermediate portion angled from the first rod engagement member.

2. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 1 wherein the pincers or jaws have a hooked end.

3. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 1 wherein the second intermediate portion is coupled to the second rod engagement member whereby the second rod engagement member is positioned in an offset orientation, off-center from the vertical longitudinal axis.

The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 1 wherein each jaw or pincer has a first end with an opening to receive the pin and a second end to receive an existing rod, each second end has a concave surface sized to a contour of the existing rod, the concave surface being opposed relative to the other.

5. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 4 wherein each concave surface has a plurality of teeth for gripping a rod.

6. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 1 further comprises two additional jaws creating multiple jaws resulting in two opposing pincers or jaws aligned in a first plane and two opposing pincers or jaws aligned in a second plane.

7. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 6 wherein the multiple jaws are configured to couple with an existing implanted tulip with a pedicle screw.

8. A tulip rod stub-connector comprises:

a first rod engagement member;

a second existing rod engagement member;

an intermediate member connecting the first rod engagement member to the second existing rod engagement member; and

wherein the first rod engagement member, the first rod engagement member is rotatable 360 degrees about the intermediate member, and has a saddle or tulip wherein the intermediate member has a female socket for engaging a bulbous or spherical male end located on the first rod engagement member of the tulip, and wherein the female socket and male end when secured together or coupled provide a polyaxial tulip allowing the tulip to rotate and be oriented in multiple directions and the second existing rod engagement member has two movable pincers or jaws pinned together at a pivot pin to receive an existing rod when open and to pivotably move inwardly toward the other pincer or jaw toward an axis of the rod to a closed position to clamp the tulip rod stub-connector onto the existing rod wherein the outer surface of the movable pincers or jaws contains threading and a threaded nut is positioned outside the first rod engagement member, and as the threaded nut moves directionally against each jaw engaging the threads of each movable pincer or jaw, the nut squeezing against each jaw, causing the jaws to move inwardly toward each other to a closed and locked position against the rod.

9. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 8 wherein moving the nut oppositely opens the jaws.

10. A tulip rod stub-connector comprises:

a first rod engagement member;

a second existing rod engagement member;

an intermediate member connecting the first rod engagement member offset or off-center relative to the second existing rod engagement member;

wherein the first rod engagement member, the first rod engagement member is rotatable 360 degrees about the intermediate member, and has a saddle or tulip wherein the intermediate member has a female socket for engaging a bulbous or spherical male end located on the first rod engagement member of the tulip, and wherein the female socket and male end when secured together or coupled provide a polyaxial tulip allowing the tulip to rotate and be oriented in multiple directions and the second existing rod engagement member has two movable pincers or jaws pinned together at a pivot pin to receive an existing rod when open and to pivotably move inwardly toward the other pincer or jaw toward an axis of the rod to a closed position to clamp the tulip rod stub-connector onto the existing rod; and

a nut, the nut being inserted in an interior of the tulip, as the nut rotates and moves inwardly toward the base the nut is contacting outer surfaces of each of the two movable pincers or jaws, the movable pincers or jaws at first ends extending above the pivot pin move closer together as causing opposing second ends of the movable pincers or jaws move towards each other to close and clamp on an existing rod.

11. The tulip rod stub-connector of claim 10 wherein untightening the nut allows the second ends to move to an open position.
