Abstract

A seat-track assembly is provided and may include a first track member having a series of locking features and a second track member slidably supported by the first track member. The seat-track assembly may also include a locking mechanism having at least two locking pawls movable between a locked state engaged with the locking features to restrict relative movement between the first and second track members and an unlocked state disengaged from the locking features to permit relative movement between the first and second track members. The at least two locking pawls may each include at least two locking elements that are received within respective ones of the series of locking features in the locked state such that each of the locking elements simultaneously restrict relative movement between the first track member and the second track member in two directions when the locking pawls are in the locked state.

Claims (19)

1. A seat-track assembly comprising:

a first track member having a series of locking features;

a second track member slidably supported by said first track member;

a locking mechanism disposed at least partially between said first track member and said second track member and including at least two locking pawls and at least two actuation arms attached to said at least two locking pawls to move said at least two locking pawls in a linear path between a locked state, where one of said at least two locking pawls is engaged with said series of locking features to restrict relative movement between said first track member and said second track member, and an unlocked state, where said at least two locking pawls are disengaged from said series of locking features to permit relative movement between said first track member and said second track member, said at least two locking pawls each including at least two locking elements, said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within respective ones of said series of locking features in said locked state such that each of said at least two locking elements simultaneously restricts relative movement between said first track member and said second track member in two directions when said one of said at least two locking pawls is in said locked state;

a mounting bracket including pockets in which said at least two actuation arms are movably disposed, said mounting bracket including a top wall abutting said second track member, said mounting bracket including stop features interacting with said at least two actuation arms to limit movement of said at least two actuation arms along said linear path; and

an actuator partially disposed within said mounting bracket and movable therein to selectively apply a force on said at least two locking pawls to maintain said at least two locking pawls in said unlocked state,

wherein at least one of said at least two locking pawls is in said unlocked state at any given time.

2. The seat-track assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least two locking pawls includes four (4) locking elements, said four (4) locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within said respective ones of said series of locking features when in said locked state.

3. The seat-track assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least two locking pawls includes six (6) locking elements, said six (6) locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within said respective ones of said series of locking features when in said locked state.

4. The seat-track assembly of claim 1 , wherein said actuator includes a pin and a rocker arm coupled to said pin, said pin selectively applying said force on said at least two locking pawls via said rocker arm to maintain said at least two locking pawls in said unlocked state, said rocker arm rotatable relative to said pin to permit said one of said at least two locking pawls to move into said locked state when said force applied to said pin is released, said rocker arm rotatable about an axis that extends through an opening in said pin.

5. The seat-track assembly of claim 1 , wherein relative movement between said first track member and said second track member is limited to substantially five (5) millimeters following the release of said force before said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within said respective ones of said series of locking features.

6. The seat-track assembly of claim 5 , wherein said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are in contact with said first track member at two locations within each of said respective ones of said series of said locking features.

7. A seat-track assembly comprising:

a first track member having a series of locking features;

a second track member slidably supported by said first track member;

a locking mechanism disposed at least partially between said first track member and said second track member and including at least two locking pawls movable between a locked state, where one of said at least two locking pawls is engaged with said series of locking features to restrict relative movement between said first track member and said second track member, and an unlocked state, where said at least two locking pawls are disengaged from said series of locking features to permit relative movement between said first track member and said second track member, said at least two locking pawls each including at least two locking elements, said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within respective ones of said series of locking features in said locked state such that each of said at least two locking elements simultaneously restricts relative movement between said first track member and said second track member in two directions when said one of said at least two locking pawls is in said locked state; and

an actuator operable to selectively apply a force on said at least two locking pawls to maintain said at least two locking pawls in said unlocked state, wherein said actuator includes a pin and a rocker arm coupled to said pin, said pin selectively applying said force on said at least two locking pawls via said rocker arm to maintain said at least two locking pawls in said unlocked state, said rocker arm rotatable relative to said pin to permit said one of said at least two locking pawls to move into said locked state when said force applied to said pin is released, said rocker arm rotatable about an axis that extends through an opening in said pin, such that said pin and said axis move together in a linear path in response to the application of said force and in response to the release of said force, said linear path being perpendicular to a direction in which said second track member moves relative to said first track member.

8. The seat-track assembly of claim 7 , wherein relative movement between said first track member and said second track member is limited to substantially five (5) millimeters following the release of said force before said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are received within said respective ones of said series of locking features.

9. The seat-track assembly of claim 8 , wherein said at least two locking elements of said one of said at least two locking pawls are in contact with said first track member at two locations within each of said respective ones of said series of said locking features.
