Abstract

Described is a syringe carrier comprising a body adapted to receive a barrel of a syringe. The body includes an enlarged distal portion having a diameter greater than a diameter of the body. The enlarged distal portion has one or more resilient barbs adapted to engage a circumferential gap between the barrel of the syringe and a needle shield covering a needle of the syringe.

Claims (41)

1. An injection device comprising:

a syringe comprising a barrel and a needle mounted to the barrel;

a needle shield covering the needle of the syringe; and

a syringe carrier comprising a body within which the barrel of the syringe is received, the body having a cylindrical shape with a first diameter and including a distal portion having one or more barbs, and the one or more barbs being resilient and engaging a circumferential gap between the barrel of the syringe and the needle shield,

wherein the distal portion of the body is enlarged and has a second diameter greater than the first diameter of the body to allow insertion of a cylindrical tool having an open end adapted to receive the needle shield, the tool having a third diameter substantially equal to the second diameter, and

wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect when engaged by the tool to allow the needle shield to pass the one or more barbs in a distal direction.

2. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more barbs project radially toward a longitudinal axis of the body.

3. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein the body includes one or more viewing windows.

4. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein the body includes a retainer element adapted to provide an abutment surface to prevent the syringe from disengaging the syringe carrier in a proximal direction.

5. A syringe insertion system for a syringe with a needle shield covering the needle of the syringe, the syringe insertion system comprising:

a syringe carrier comprising a body adapted to receive a barrel of the syringe, the body having a cylindrical shape with a first diameter and including a distal portion having one or more barbs, and the one or more barbs being resilient and adapted to engage a circumferential gap between the barrel of the syringe and the needle shield; and

a tool for inserting the syringe with the needle shield into the syringe carrier, the tool comprising a shell comprising an open end adapted to receive the needle shield, and the shell having a first surface adapted to engage the one or more barbs of the syringe carrier when the tool is inserted into the distal portion of the body,

wherein the distal portion of the body is enlarged and has a second diameter greater than the first diameter of the body to allow insertion of the tool, the tool having a third diameter substantially equal to the second diameter, and

wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect when engaged by the tool to allow the needle shield to pass the one or more barbs in a distal direction.

6. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein the first diameter is an inner diameter of the body, the second diameter is an inner diameter of the distal portion of the body, and the third diameter is an outer diameter of the tool.

7. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein a minimum inner diameter of the tool is greater than a maximum outer diameter of the needle shield.

8. The injection device according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more barbs comprise:

a proximally-facing contoured surface to accommodate a proximal portion of a distal neck portion of the syringe, and

a distally-facing contoured surface to abut the needle shield.

9. The injection device according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect away from the longitudinal axis of the body when engaged by the tool.

10. The injection device according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more barbs are angled toward a proximal end of the body.

The injection device according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect from an initial position to a deflected position such that, when the one or more barbs are in the deflected position, a distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body is greater than a distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the initial position.

12. The injection device according to claim 11 , wherein:

the distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the deflected position is greater than a diameter of the needle shield, and

the distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the initial position is less than the diameter of the needle shield.

13. The syringe insertion system according to claim 5 , wherein the first diameter is an inner diameter of the body, the second diameter is an inner diameter of the distal portion of the body, and the third diameter is an outer diameter of the tool.

14. The syringe insertion system according to claim 5 , wherein a minimum inner diameter of the tool is greater than a maximum outer diameter of the needle shield.

15. The syringe insertion system according to claim 8 , wherein the one or more barbs comprise:

a proximally-facing contoured surface to accommodate a proximal portion of a distal neck portion of the syringe, and

a distally-facing contoured surface to abut the needle shield.

16. The syringe insertion system according to claim 5 , wherein the one or more barbs project radially toward a longitudinal axis of the body.

17. The syringe insertion system according to claim 16 , wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect away from the longitudinal axis of the body when engaged by the tool.

18. The syringe insertion system according to claim 16 , wherein the one or more barbs are angled toward a proximal end of the body.

The syringe insertion system according to claim 16 , wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to deflect from an initial position to a deflected position such that, when the one or more barbs are in the deflected position, a distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body is greater than a distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the initial position.

20. The syringe insertion system according to claim 19 , wherein:

the distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the deflected position is greater than a diameter of the needle shield, and

the distance between the one or more barbs and the longitudinal axis of the body when the one or more barbs are in the initial position is less than the diameter of the needle shield.

21. A syringe carrier comprising:

a body adapted to receive a barrel of a syringe,

the body having a cylindrical shape with a first diameter and including a distal portion having one or more barbs initially projecting radially toward a longitudinal axis of the body, the distal portion being enlarged and having a second diameter greater than the first diameter of the body to allow insertion of a cylindrical tool having an open end adapted to receive a needle shield covering a needle of the syringe, the tool having a third diameter substantially equal to the second diameter, and the one or more barbs being resilient and adapted to engage a circumferential gap between the barrel of the syringe and the needle shield,

wherein the one or more barbs are adapted to project radially toward a longitudinal axis of the body in an absence of an external force exerted by the tool on the body and are adapted to deflect away from the longitudinal axis of the body when engaged by the tool to allow the needle shield to pass the one or more barbs in a distal direction.
