Abstract

An apparatus comprising: a first optical member configured to receive light from a flash unit, in a first direction, to refract the received light, and to output the refracted light in a second direction, different to the first direction; and a first actuator configured to move the first optical member between a first position in which light from the flash unit is not substantially refracted, and a second position in which light from the flash unit is refracted by the first optical member in the second direction.

Claims (28)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first optical member configured to receive light from a flash unit, in a first direction, to refract the received light, and to output the refracted light in a second direction, different to the first direction; and

a first actuator configured to move the first optical member between a first position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is not substantially refracted, and a second position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is refracted by the first optical member in the second direction.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first optical member includes a magnet, and the first actuator includes a first electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the first position, and a second electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the second position.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2 , further comprising a controller configured to receive an input signal from a user input device and configured to control the first actuator to move the first optical member between the first position and the second position in response to the user input signal.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2 , further comprising a controller configured to determine if light from the flash unit should be redirected, and to control the first actuator to move the first optical member between the first position and the second position in response to the determination.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first optical member is further configured to refract the received light from the flash unit in a third direction, different to the first and second directions, the first actuator being further configured to move the first optical member to a third position in which light from the flash unit is refracted by the first optical member in the third direction.

6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first actuator is configured to move the first optical member perpendicular relative to the first direction.

7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first optical member includes a Fresnel lens.

8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to enable a user to replace the first optical member with a different optical member.

9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

a second optical member configured to receive light from the flash unit, to refract the received light, and to output the refracted light in a fourth direction, different to the first, second and third directions; and

a second actuator configured to move the second optical member between a first position in which light from the flash unit is not substantially refracted, and a second position in which light from the flash unit is refracted by the second optical member in the fourth direction.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the second actuator is configured to move the second optical member perpendicular relative to the first direction, and the first optical member and the second optical member having an overlaying arrangement when the first optical member is in the second position and the second optical member is in the second position, the overlaying relationship being configured to refract light from the flash unit in a direction corresponding to a combination of the second direction and the fourth direction.

11. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

a third optical member configured to receive light from the flash unit and to magnify the received light; and

a third actuator configured to move the third optical member between a first position in which light from the flash unit is not substantially magnified, and a second position in which light from the flash unit is magnified by the third optical member.

12. A portable electronic device comprising an apparatus as claimed in claim 1 .

13. A method comprising:

controlling a first actuator to move a first optical member, the first optical member being configured to receive light from a flash unit, in a first direction, to refract the received light, and to output the refracted light in a second direction, different to the first direction, between a first position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is not substantially refracted, and a second position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is refracted by the first optical member in the second direction.

A method as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the first optical member includes a magnet, and the first actuator includes a first electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the first position, and a second electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the second position.

15. A method as claimed in claim 13 , further comprising receiving an input signal from a user input device and controlling the first actuator to move the first optical member between the first position and the second position in response to the user input signal.

16. A method as claimed in claim 13 , further comprising determining if light from the flash unit should be redirected, and controlling the first actuator to move the first optical member between the first position and the second position in response to the determination.

A method as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the first optical member is further configured to refract the received light from the flash unit in a third direction, different to the first and second directions, and the method further comprises controlling the first actuator to move the first optical member to a third position in which light from the flash unit is refracted by the first optical member in the third direction.

18. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the first optical member comprises a plurality of portion.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium encoded with instructions that, when performed by a processor, cause performance of:

controlling a first actuator to move a first optical member, the first optical member being configured to receive light from a flash unit, in a first direction, to refract the received light, and to output the refracted light in a second direction, different to the first direction, between a first position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is not substantially refracted, and a second position in which light from the flash unit in the first direction is refracted by the first optical member in the second direction.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as claimed in claim 19 , wherein the first optical member includes a magnet, and the first actuator includes a first electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the first position, and a second electromagnet configured to attract the magnet of the first optical member and to move the first optical member to the second position.
