Abstract

A motor vehicle electrical power distribution system includes a plurality of distribution sub-systems, an electrical power storage sub-system and a plurality of switching devices for selective connection of elements of and loads on the power distribution system to the electrical power storage sub-system. A state transition initiator provides inputs to control system operation of switching devices to change the states of the power distribution system. The state transition initiator has a plurality of positions selection of which can initiate a state transition. The state transition initiator can emulate a four position rotary ignition switch. Fail safe power cutoff switches provide high voltage switching device protection.

Claims (35)

1 . A power distribution system comprising:

a electrical power storage system;

a power bus;

a plurality of loads;

isolation contactors for connecting the power bus to the electrical power storage system and accessory contactors for connecting the plurality of loads to the power bus with the isolation and accessory contactors having high and low side control inputs;

a source of on and off system status signals;

a system status relay having high and low side control inputs with the high side control input being connected to the source of the system status signals;

at least a first mechanically actuable switch for connecting and interrupting connection of the low side control input for the system status relay to ground; and

the control system having an input from the low side control input for the system status relay, the control system being responsive to interruption of the connection to ground through the system status relay for applying signals to the high side control inputs of selected isolation and accessory contactors to open the selected contactors to implement a shut down of the power distribution system.

4 . The power distribution system of claim 1 , further comprising:

the system status relay providing an interruptible connection between the low side control inputs for the system and accessory contactors and ground.

7 . The power distribution system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a control system sensitive relay having a high side and low side control inputs with the high side control input being connect to the control system and the low side control input connected to ground; and

the control system sensitive relay providing an interruptible connection between the low side control inputs for the system and accessory contactors and ground.

8 . The power distribution system of claim 3 , further comprising:

the control system having a failure mode responsive to which the control signal applied to the side control input of the control system sensitive relay assumes a value resulting in the control system sensitive relay closing.

The power distribution system of claim 4 wherein the power distribution system is installed on a motor vehicle and ground is chassis ground.

The power distribution system of claim 5 further comprising an electrical generation facility which may be connected to the power bus by an isolation contactor.

7 . A hybrid-electric motor vehicle comprising:

electrical power generation and storage facilities;

a power bus;

a plurality of loads;

isolation contactors for connecting the power bus to the electrical power generation and storage facilities and accessory contactors for connecting the plurality of loads to the power bus with the isolation and accessory contactors having high and low side control inputs;

a source of on and off system status signals;

a system status relay having high and low side control inputs with the high side control input being connected to the source of the system status signals;

at least a first mechanically actuable switch for connecting and interrupting connection of the low side control input for the system status relay to ground; and

the control system having an input from the low side control input for the system status relay, the control system being responsive to interruption of the connection to ground through the system status relay for applying signals to the high side control inputs of selected isolation and accessory contactors to open the selected contactors to implement a shut down of the power distribution system.

8 . The hybrid-electric vehicle of claim 7 wherein the control system includes a body computer and a controller area network.

9 . The hybrid-electric vehicle of claim 8 , further comprising:

the system status relay providing an interruptible connection between the low side control inputs for the system and accessory contactors and ground.

10 . The hybrid-electric vehicle of claim 9 , further comprising:

a control system sensitive relay having a high side and low side control inputs with the high side control input being connect to the control system and the low side control input connected to ground; and

the control system sensitive relay providing an interruptible connection between the low side control inputs for the system and accessory contactors and ground.

11 . The hybrid-electric vehicle of claim 10 , further comprising:

the control system having a failure mode responsive to which the control signal applied to the side control input of the control system sensitive relay assumes a value resulting in the control system sensitive relay closing.
