Abstract

A silicone-grafted core-shell particle is described wherein the silicone-grafted core-shell particle comprises a core of an inorganic particle and a shell of a grafted poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer formed from a bi-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) having reactive groups at each terminal end. The silicone-grafted core-shell particles may be dispersed in a polysiloxane polymer matrix and employed as an LED encapsulant.

Claims (19)

1. A silicone-grafted core-shell particle comprising a core of an inorganic particle and a shell of a grafted poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer formed from a bi-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) having reactive groups at each terminal end.

2. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the reactive groups are selected from:

wherein R and R′ are selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl, a is from 1 to 3, b is 3−a, and n is from 1 to 10.

3. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate, or aluminum nitride.

4. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of aluminum oxide.

5. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of titanium dioxide.

6. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of aluminum nitride.

7. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is —CH═CH 2 .

8. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is

and n is from 1 to 10.

9. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is (RO) a R′ b C(CH 2 ) n — and R and R′ are selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl, a is from 1 to 3, b is 3−a, and n is from 1 to 10.

10. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is selected from:

and R is selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl, and n is from 1 to 10.

11. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is HOOC—(CH 2 ) n — and n is from 1 to 10.

12. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is HS—.

13. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein one of the reactive groups is

and n is from 1 to 10.

14. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of silicon dioxide and the reactive group at each terminal end is —H.

15. The silicone-grafted core-shell particle of claim 1 wherein the inorganic particle is comprised of aluminum oxide and one of the reactive groups is HOOC—(CH 2 ) n — and n is from 1 to 10.
