Abstract

A handling device for handling an augmentation implant is proposed, comprising an elongated housing having an axial through-bore for accommodating a sonotrode of an ultrasound applicator, and a lateral opening for inserting a pin magazine with an augmentation pin, wherein the axial through-bore and the lateral opening are connected to each other. The handling device further comprises a distal implant portion for fastening a proximal end of the augmentation implant at the housing, and a proximal tool portion for driving and/or augmenting the augmentation implant.

Claims (16)

1. A handling and implanting system for handling and implanting an augmentation screw, comprising:

a plurality of polymeric augmentation pins,

an augmentation screw comprising a proximal end portion, a distal tip, and a body portion extending along a first longitudinal axis and connecting the distal tip to the proximal end portion, the augmentation screw includes an axial bore extending through the proximal end portion, the body portion and the distal tip for receiving at least one of the plurality of augmentation pins, the axial bore includes a first section adjacent the distal tip with a first inner diameter and a second section adjacent the proximal end portion with a second inner diameter, and a seating step is defined in the axial bore between the first and second sections, a plurality of radial bores extending through the body portion and in fluid communication with the axial bore,

a closing plug insertable into the augmentation screw axial bore, the closing plug including a distal leading portion, a proximal portion and a seating portion defined between the proximal portion and the distal leading portion and having an outer diameter greater than the first inner diameter, the proximal portion of the closing plug includes a plurality of channels configured to allow fluid communication between the plurality of radial bores and the axial bore of the augmentation screw when the closing plug is inserted into the axial bore and the seating portion of the closing plug is seated on the seating step of the augmentation screw,

an elongated housing having a distal screw portion, a proximal tool portion and a body portion extending along a second longitudinal axis and connecting the distal screw portion to the proximal tool portion, said elongate housing includes an axial through-bore extending through the proximal tool portion, the body portion and the distal screw portion of the elongated housing, and a lateral opening extending through the body portion of the elongate housing including a locking element, wherein the axial through-bore and the lateral opening are connected to each other, the distal screw portion is configured to be connected to the proximal end portion of the augmentation screw, such that the axial through bore of the elongated housing is aligned with the axial through bore of the augmentation screw, and the proximal tool portion is configured to drive and/or augment the augmentation screw, such that applied torque on the proximal tool portion is transmitted to the augmentation screw,

a pin-magazine including a plurality of pin-retainers for retaining the plurality of augmentation polymeric pins therein, wherein the pin-magazine is designed corresponding to and is placeable and is lockable by the locking element in the lateral opening of the elongated housing and is configured to align one of the pin-retainers with the axial through-bore of the elongated housing for inserting the augmentation pin into the axial bore of the augmentation screw, when the augmentation pin is located in the pin-retainer

an ultrasound applicator having an ultrasound transducer and a sonotrode, the sonotrode is slidably and at least partially accommodated in the axial through-bores of the elongated housing and the augmentation screw when the elongated housing is connected to the augmentation screw, such that when the augmentation pin is placed in the lateral opening and is aligned with the axial through-bore of the elongated housing, then at least one of the augmentation pins is pushed by the sonotrode through at least a portion of the axial through-bore of the elongated housing, out of the housing and into the axial bore of the augmentation screw, and then fluidized within the axial bore of the augmentation screw due to ultrasound vibrations generated from the ultrasound transducer, then pressed out through the radial bores of the augmentation screw.

2. The handling and implanting system of claim 1 , wherein the sonotrode of the ultrasound applicator includes an intermediate section with a reduced diameter relative to proximal and distal sections thereof.

3. A method for augmenting the augmentation screw of claim 1 , the method comprising the steps of:

(a) connecting the elongated housing of claim 1 to the augmentation screw of claim 1 ,

(b) placing one of the polymeric augmentation pins loaded in the pin magazine of claim 1 in the lateral opening of the elongated housing,

(c) aligning the one of the polymeric augmentation pins with the axial through-bore of the elongated housing,

(d) pushing the one augmentation pin into the augmentation screw by the sonotrode of claim 1 ,

(e) fluidizing the one augmentation pin the ultrasound vibrations generated from the ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , and

(f) pressing the fluidized pin at least partially out of the augmentation screw.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein steps (b) to (f) are repeated with at least one further augmentation pin of the polymeric augmentation pins of claim 1 .
