Abstract

Techniques for component protective overmolding using protective external coatings include a device having a framework, an element coupled to the framework, a protective material selectively applied substantially over the element, a spacer on or adjacent to the element, a tubing covering the spacer and the element, the tubing and the spacer configured to relieve strain on the element when the framework is flexed, and one or more moldings formed substantially over a subset or all of the framework, the protective material and the element, at least one of the one or more moldings having a protective property.

Claims (36)

1 . A device, comprising:

a framework configured to be worn;

a plurality of elements coupled to the framework, the plurality of elements including at least a sensor;

a curable coating selectively applied substantially over one or more of the plurality of elements;

a spacer on or adjacent to at least one of the plurality of elements;

a tubing covering the spacer and the at least one of the plurality of elements, the tubing and the spacer configured to relieve strain on the at least one of the plurality of elements; and

a molding formed substantially over at least a subset of the plurality of elements, the molding configured to provide a protective property.

2 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a tape loop configured to secure the tubing during a molding process.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding is anti-bacterial.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding is oleophobic.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding is configured to protect against ultraviolet radiation.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding is hydrophobic.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding is configured to provide a waterproof seal over the plurality of elements.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the molding has a pattern.

9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the curable coating is configured to secure the one or more of the plurality of elements to the framework.

10 . A device, comprising:

a framework configured to be worn;

a plurality of elements coupled to the framework, the plurality of elements including at least a sensor;

a protective material selectively applied substantially over one or more of a plurality of elements;

a spacer on or adjacent to at least one of the plurality of elements;

a tubing covering the spacer and the at least one of the plurality of elements, the tubing and the spacer configured to relieve strain on the at least one of the plurality of elements; and

one or more moldings formed substantially over a subset or all of the framework, the protective material and the plurality of elements, after the protective material has been selectively applied, at least one of the one or more moldings having a protective property.

11 . A device, comprising:

a framework;

an element coupled to the framework;

a protective material selectively applied substantially over the element;

a spacer on or adjacent to the element;

a tubing covering the spacer and the element, the tubing and the spacer configured to relieve strain on the element when the framework is flexed; and

one or more moldings formed substantially over a subset or all of the framework, the protective material and the element, at least one of the one or more moldings having a protective property.

12 . The device of claim 11 , further comprising a tape loop configured to secure the tubing when the one or more moldings is being formed.

13 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective property is waterproofing.

14 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective property is water-resistance.

15 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective property is being hydrophobic.

16 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective property is being oleophobic.

17 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective property is being anti-bacterial.

18 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the protective material is configured to protect the element from damage occurring when the one or more moldings is being formed.
