Abstract

The present invention is silver (I) periodate compounds and their use in preventing or reducing microbial contamination. The invention includes gels, coatings, and articles of manufacture having a surface contacted or coated with a gel comprising an antimicrobial silver (I) compound. Methods of treatment are also disclosed.

Claims (52)

1. An article of manufacture comprising a gel comprising at least one antimicrobial compound that releases an anion of 3 − charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, the at least one antimicrobial compound selected from the group consisting of:

pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag 5 IO 6 );

Ag x H y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;

Ag x M y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof; and

any combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.

The article of claim 1 wherein the gel is a gel selected from the group consisting of: water, xanthan gum, and PEG-180; water, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyacrylic acid, sodium polyacrylate, methyl paraben, and propyl paraben; water, glycerin, and glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer; water, pectin, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose; water, propylene glycol, absorbent polymer, crilanomer, and a Graft-T starch copolymer; water, glycerol, absorbent polymer, allantoin, and antiseptic/preservative; and water and carboxymethylcellulose; and any combinations thereof.

3. The article of claim 1 wherein the gel is a hydrogel.

4. The article of manufacture of claim 1 wherein the article is selected from the group consisting of a wound dressing, a wound healing material or composition, a medical instrument, a medical device, a metallic article, or a portion thereof.

A method of making a surface or substrate antimicrobial, comprising forming or coating the surface or substrate with a gel comprising at least one antimicrobial compound that releases an anion of 3 − charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, the at least one antimicrobial compound selected from the group consisting of:

pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag 5 IO 6 );

Ag x H y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;

Ag x M y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof; and

any combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the surface is selected from the group consisting of a wound dressing, a wound healing material or composition, a medical instrument, a medical device, a metallic article, human or animal skin, a plant, a seed, or a portion thereof.

A gel formulation comprising a two-phase suspension consisting of a solid and a liquid, wherein said suspension further comprises at least one antimicrobial compound that releases an anion of 3 − charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, the at least one antimicrobial compound selected from the group consisting of:

pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag 5 IO 6 );

Ag x H y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;

Ag x M y IO 6 , where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof; and

any combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.

The gel formulation of claim 7 wherein the gel is a gel selected from the group consisting of: water, xanthan gum, and PEG-180; water, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyacrylic acid, sodium polyacrylate, methyl paraben, and propylparaben; water, glycerin and glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer; water, pectin, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose; water, propylene glycol, absorbent polymer, crilanomer, and a Graft-T starch copolymer; water glycerol, absorbent polymer, allantoin, and antiseptic/preservative; and water and carboxymethylcellulose; and any combinations thereof.

9. The article of claim 1 wherein the gel is a gel in which the compounds of claim 1 are stable.

10. The method of claim 5 wherein the gel is a gel in which the compounds of claim 5 are stable.

11. The gel formulation of claim 7 wherein the gel is a gel in which the compounds of claim 7 are stable.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 1 wherein the at least one antimicrobial compound comprises:

an anion selected from the group consisting of Ag 2 IO 6 3− and AgM′IO 6 3− , wherein M′ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding anions in which silver has a valency greater than 1; and

a cation selected from the group consisting of Ag 3 3+ , Ag 2 M″ 3+ , AgM″ 3+ , and M″ 3+ , wherein M″ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding cations in which silver has a valency greater than 1.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 12 wherein the M′ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Au, Cu, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof; and the M″ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Mg, Ca, Au, Pt, Cu, Zn, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof.

14. The article of manufacture of claim 12 wherein silver is present in both the anion and the cation of the one or more antimicrobial compounds, the silver having a valency of 1.

15. The article of manufacture of claim 1 wherein the gel further comprises at least one additional agent selected from the group consisting of: at least one antibiotic, at least one heavy metal, at least one salt of a heavy metal, and at least one inactive ingredient.

16. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the at least one antibiotic comprises at least one antibiotic selected from the group consisting of: streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, penicillin, gentamicin, and any combinations thereof.

The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the at least one inactive ingredient comprises at least one inactive ingredient selected from the group consisting of: emulsifiers, thickening agents, solvents, anti-foaming agents, preservatives, fragrances, coloring agents, emollients, fillers, and any combinations thereof.

The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the at least one heavy metal comprises at least one heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: gold, platinum, silver, zinc, copper, and any combinations thereof; and the at least one salt of a heavy metal comprises at least one salt of a heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphate, periodate, and any combinations thereof.

19. The article of manufacture of claim 1 wherein the antimicrobial compounds are anti-biofilm.

The method of claim 5 wherein the gel is a gel selected from the group consisting of: water, xanthan gum, and PEG-180; water, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyacrylic acid, sodium polyacrylate, methyl paraben, and propylparaben; water, glycerin and glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer; water, pectin, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose; water, propylene glycol, absorbent polymer, crilanomer, and a Graft-T starch copolymer; water, glycerol, absorbent polymer, allantoin, and antiseptic/preservative; and water and carboxymethylcellulose; and any combinations thereof.

21. The method of claim 5 wherein the at least one antimicrobial compound comprises:

an anion selected from the group consisting of Ag 2 IO 6 3− and AgM′IO 6 3− , wherein M′ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding anions in which silver has a valency greater than 1; and

a cation selected from the group consisting of Ag 3 3+ , Ag 2 M″ 3+ , AgM″ 3+ , and M″ 3+ , wherein M″ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding cations in which silver has a valency greater than 1.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the M′ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Au, Cu, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof; and the M″ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Mg, Ca, Au, Pt, Cu, Zn, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein silver is present in both the anion and the cation of the one or more antimicrobial compounds, the silver having a valency of 1.

24. The method of claim 5 wherein the gel further comprises at least one additional agent selected from the group consisting of: at least one antibiotic, at least one heavy metal, at least one salt of a heavy metal, and at least one inactive ingredient.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein the at least one antibiotic comprises at least one antibiotic selected from the group consisting of: streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, penicillin, gentamicin, and any combinations thereof.

The method of claim 24 wherein the at least one inactive ingredient comprises at least one inactive ingredient selected from the group consisting of: emulsifiers, thickening agents, solvents, anti-foaming agents, preservatives, fragrances, coloring agents, emollients, fillers, and any combinations thereof.

The method of claim 24 wherein the at least one heavy metal comprises at least one heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: gold, platinum, silver, zinc, copper, and any combinations thereof; and the at least one salt of a heavy metal comprises at least one salt of a heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphate, periodate, and any combinations thereof.

28. The gel formulation of claim 7 wherein the at least one antimicrobial compound comprises:

an anion selected from the group consisting of Ag 2 IO 6 3− and AgM′IO 6 3− , wherein M′ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding anions in which silver has a valency greater than 1; and

a cation selected from the group consisting of Ag 3 3+ , Ag 2 M″ 3+ , AgM″ 3+ , and M″ 3+ , wherein M″ is one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof, excluding cations in which silver has a valency greater than 1.

29. The gel formulation of claim 28 wherein the M′ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Au, Cu, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof; and the M″ is selected from the group of elements consisting of: K, Na, Mg, Ca, Au, Pt, Cu, Zn, H, Fe, and any combinations thereof.

30. The gel formulation of claim 28 wherein silver is present in both the anion and the cation of the one or more antimicrobial compounds, the silver having a valency of 1.

31. The gel formulation of claim 7 wherein the gel further comprises at least one additional agent selected from the group consisting of: at least one antibiotic, at least one heavy metal, at least one salt of a heavy metal, and at least one inactive ingredient.

32. The gel formulation of claim 31 wherein the at least one antibiotic comprises at least one antibiotic selected from the group consisting of: streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, penicillin, gentamicin, and any combinations thereof.

The gel formulation of claim 31 wherein the at least one inactive ingredient comprises at least one inactive ingredient selected from the group consisting of: emulsifiers, thickening agents, solvents, anti-foaming agents, preservatives, fragrances, coloring agents, emollients, fillers, and any combinations thereof.

The gel formulation of claim 31 wherein the at least one heavy metal comprises at least one heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: gold, platinum, silver, zinc, copper, and any combinations thereof; and the at least one salt of a heavy metal comprises at least one salt of a heavy metal selected from the group consisting of: chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphate, periodate, and any combinations thereof.
