Abstract

A method and apparatus for improving and performing mmW beam tracking is disclosed. Localization methods to improve prediction of the position of a WTRU are described, which may allow a millimeter wave base station (mB) to appropriately select a modified beam and to perform more efficient handover. WTRUs may report directional signal strength measurements to mBs, which may then be used to generate a directional radio environment map (DREM) for use in identifying secondary links to use when a primary link fails. Additional localization techniques using internal/external information for prediction are described. Historical data use and the use of data obtained from mB-mB cooperation including feedback information and reference signaling information are also described. Methods for beam tracking for directional relays and initial beam training optimization are described as well. Finally, WTRU localization precision improvement, beamwidth adaptation, and assisted beam tracking and handover methods are also described.

Claims (51)

1. A method for use in a base station (BS) for handover of a communication link from a primary beam, the method comprising:

establishing a communication link with a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), wherein the communication link uses a primary beam;

transmitting a request to the WTRU to perform at least one directional signal strength measurement on at least one signal received by the WTRU;

transmitting a request to the WTRU to provide location data associated with the WTRU;

receiving at least one performed directional signal strength measurement from the WTRU;

receiving location data associated with the WTRU;

generating a directional radio environment map (DREM) based on the at least one received directional signal strength measurement from the WTRU and the received location data associated with the WTRU; and

performing a handover of the communication link from the primary beam to a secondary beam, on a condition that the primary beam is disrupted, wherein the secondary beam is selected based on the generated DREM.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directional signal strength measurements are performed on broadcast beacon messages.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting a request to the WTRU to provide orientation data associated with the WTRU;

receiving orientation data associated with the WTRU; and

updating the DREM based on the received orientation data associated with the WTRU.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving historical data on beams used by the WTRU; and

updating the DREM based on the received historical data on beams used by the WTRU.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

feeding back the DREM to a neighboring BS to provide the neighboring BS access to the DREM.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directional signal strength measurements are performed on inter-cell signals.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting the DREM to a central network entity for storage, wherein the DREM may be accessed by a neighboring BS.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directional signal strength measurements are performed by a relay WTRU.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting location information of the BS to the WTRU.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

filtering the performed directional signal strength measurements based on time and GPS coordinates.

11. A base station (BS) configured for handover of a communication link from a primary beam, the BS comprising:

a transmitter configured to establish a communication link with a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), wherein the communication link uses a primary beam;

the transmitter further configured to transmit a request to the WTRU to perform at least one directional signal strength measurement on at least one signal received by the WTRU;

the transmitter further configured to transmit a request to the WTRU to provide location data associated with the WTRU;

a receiver configured to receive at least one performed directional signal strength measurement from the WTRU;

the receiver further configured to receive location data associated with the WTRU;

a processor configured to generate a directional radio environment map (DREM) based on the at least one received directional signal strength measurement from the WTRU and the received location data associated with the WTRU; and

the processor configured to perform a handover of the communication link from the primary beam to a secondary beam, on a condition that the primary beam is disrupted, wherein the secondary beam is selected based on the generated DREM.

12. The BS of claim 11 , further comprising:

the transmitter further configured to transmit a request to the WTRU to provide orientation data associated with the WTRU;

the receiver further configured to receive orientation data associated with the WTRU; and

the processor further configured to update the DREM based on the received orientation data associated with the WTRU.

13. The BS of claim 11 , further comprising:

the receiver further configured to receive historical data on beams used by the WTRU; and

the processor further configured to update the DREM based on the received historical data on beams used by the WTRU.

14. The BS of claim 11 , further comprising:

the transmitter further configured to transmit the DREM to a neighboring BS to provide the neighboring BS access to the DREM.

15. The BS of claim 11 , wherein the directional signal strength measurements are performed on inter-cell signals.
