Steam cleaning appliance
Embodiments of the invention disclosed herein include steam appliances and methods which apply steam and a liquid containing a cleaning agent to the floor via separate outlets. In some embodiments, the liquid containing a cleaning agent is applied to an area of the floor that is physically separated from a steam application area. The steam may be applied to the floor through a steam-permeable fabric. The liquid containing a cleaning agent may be heated before being applied to the floor or being mixed with steam.
1. A steam cleaning appliance for cleaning floors comprising:
a cleaning head configured to attach a steam-permeable cleaning pad to contact a floor;
an elongated appliance body attached to the cleaning head to maneuver the cleaning head on the floor;
a liquid applicator comprising an electric pump electrically coupled to at least one battery, the liquid applicator being configured to apply a first liquid to the floor;
a steam source to generate steam from a second liquid, the steam source being electrically coupled to a power outlet through a power cord;
a steam outlet in communication with the steam source and configured to apply steam to the floor through the cleaning pad, the steam outlet being separate from the liquid applicator; and
an automatically actuating lock that actuates between a locked position and an unlocked position in response to the steam source being electrically coupled or electrically decoupled from the power outlet such that
when the steam source is electrically coupled to the power outlet, the second liquid can be urged into the steam source such that steam is capable of flowing from the steam outlet and the electric pump can cause the first liquid to be applied to the floor; and
when the steam source is not electrically coupled to the power outlet, the second liquid is substantially prevented from being urged into the steam source such that steam is substantially prevented from flowing from the steam outlet and the electric pump can cause the first liquid to be applied to the floor.
2. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 , wherein the steam outlet and the cleaning head are configured such that when the cleaning pad is attached to the cleaning head, steam being emitted from the steam outlet permeates the cleaning pad to reach the floor.
3. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 , further comprising the cleaning pad.
4. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 3 , wherein the cleaning pad is a washable and re-usable pad.
5. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 , further comprising:
a first reservoir to hold the first liquid; and
a second reservoir to hold the second liquid; wherein
the liquid applicator is in communication with the first reservoir to receive the first liquid; and the steam source is in communication with the second reservoir to receive the second liquid.
6. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 5 , wherein the liquid applicator comprises a spray nozzle.
7. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 6 , wherein the spray nozzle is positioned on the cleaning head.
8. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 5 , further comprising:
a first conduit connecting the first reservoir to the liquid applicator; and
a second conduit connecting the steam source to the second reservoir; wherein
heat from the steam which passes through the second conduit heats the first liquid present in the first conduit.
9. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 , wherein:
the appliance is operable to apply steam to the floor without applying the first liquid to the floor; and
the appliance is operable to apply the first liquid to the floor without applying steam to the floor.
10. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 , wherein the first liquid and the second liquid are different liquids.
11. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 1 further comprising a manually actuated pump, the manually actuated pump being configured to urge the second liquid into the steam source.
12. A steam cleaning appliance as in claim 11 , wherein, when the lock is in the locked position, actuation of the manually actuated pump is substantially prevented.
