Abstract

An anchorage in tissue is produced by holding a vibrating element and a counter element against each other such that their contact faces are in contact with each other, wherein at least one of the contact faces includes a thermoplastic material which is liquefiable by mechanical vibration. While holding and then moving the two elements against each other, the vibrating element is vibrated and due to the vibration the thermoplastic material is liquefied between the contact faces, and due to the relative movement is made to flow from between the contact faces and to penetrate tissue located adjacent to outer edges of the contact faces. For liquefaction of the thermoplastic material and for displacing it from between the contact faces, no force needs to act on the tissue surface which is to be penetrated by the liquefied material.

Claims (17)

1. A method of producing an anchorage in a load-bearing tissue with the aid of mechanical vibration and a thermoplastic material which is liquefiable by the mechanical vibration, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a vibrating element with a distal end and a proximal end, the vibrating element being capable of transmitting vibration from its proximal end to its distal end, and wherein the distal end comprises a first contact face facing away from the proximal end,

providing a counter element with a contact end and an opposite end, wherein the contact end comprises a second contact face being adapted to the first contact face to be able to be positioned against the first contact face, wherein the liquefiable thermoplastic material is located on at least the second contact face, and wherein the counter element comprises a body with the second contact face and a flexible force transmitting member reaching past or through at least the distal end of the vibrating element,

positioning the vibrating element and the counter element relative to the tissue, with the first and second contact faces in contact with each other,

vibrating the vibrating element while holding the vibrating element against the counter element by a first holding force and while causing the flexible force transmitting member to hold the body against the vibrating element by a second, opposite holding force,

maintaining the vibration and the holding forces to liquefy at least a portion of the liquefiable thermoplastic material and letting the liquefied thermoplastic material to flow out from between the contact faces, and thereby moving the vibrating element and the counter element against each other, for a time sufficient for the liquefied material to contact a tissue surface and, on re-solidification, to form a positive fit connection between at least the counter element and the tissue surface.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible force transmitting member comprises at least one of a suture, a wire, a cable, a ribbon.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible force transmitting member comprises a flexible sleeve.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the flexible sleeve is made of a non-liquefiable material.

5. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the flexible sleeve is made of filaments by weaving, braiding, knotting or knitting.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of providing the counter element, the flexible force transmitting member is provided attached to a support element.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein in the step of positioning, the support element is positioned on an outer tissue surface from which an opening in the tissue extends and the flexible force transmitting member and the body are positioned to extend into the opening.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the support element is ring shaped or plate shaped with a through opening.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the flexible force transmitting member comprises a flexible sleeve, wherein the step of positioning comprises positioning the support element relative to the outer tissue surface such that at least the distal end of the sleeve is positioned in the opening provided in the tissue beneath the tissue surface.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the flexible force transmitting member comprises a resilient suture or ribbon and wherein the method comprises a step of attaching the flexible force transmitting member to a housing of the vibration source.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a tubular portion and wherein in the step of positioning the flexible force transmitting member is caused to extend through the tubular portion.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein during the step of holding the vibrating element against the counter element by a first holding force while causing the flexible force transmitting member to hold the body against the vibrating element by a second, opposite holding force, the vibrating element is subject to a compressive load and the flexible force transmitting member is subject to a tensile load.
