Abstract

A first document may be requested and received from a server device. Based on the first document, a web page may be rendered for display. The rendered web page may include a set of selectable items, each corresponding to a respective type of web page content. The set of selectable items may be defined in a user profile of a user associated with the client device. It may be determined that a scroll position of the rendered web page has a particular characteristic. Perhaps in response to determining that the scroll position of the rendered web page has the particular characteristic, one of the selectable items may be selected. A second document may be requested and received from the server device. The second document may be associated with the selected item. Based on the first document and the second document, the web page may be re-rendered for display.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

based on a first document received from a server device, rendering, by a web browser executing on a client device, a web page for display, wherein the rendered web page includes a set of selectable hyperlinks that are ordered based on a user preference of a user associated with the client device;

determining, by the web browser, that a scroll position of the rendered web page has a passed a first threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the rendered web page has passed the first threshold scroll position,

requesting and receiving, by the web browser, a second document from the server device, wherein the second document is reachable by way of a first selectable hyperlink as ordered on the rendered web page;

re-rendering, by the web browser, the web page for display, including combined content from both the first document and the second document;

after re-rendering the web page for display, determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed a second threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed the second threshold scroll position, further re-rendering the web page to eliminate content from one of the first document or the second document; and

removing a representation of the eliminated content from memory of the client device that is associated with the web browser.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein rendering the web page for display comprises constructing a document object model representation of the first document, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises modifying the document object model representation of the first document to also represent at least some of the second document.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second document follows the first document in the ordering defined by the user preference, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises re-rendering the web page to represent the first document followed by the second document.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adding a first uniform resource locator (URL) associated with the first document to a browsing history of the web browser;

after re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed a second threshold scroll position; and

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed below the second threshold scroll position, adding a second URL associated with the second document to the browsing history, wherein the second URL follows the first URL in the browsing history.

5. An article of manufacture including a non-transitory computer-readable medium, having stored thereon program instructions that, upon execution by a client device, cause a web browser executing on the client device to perform operations comprising:

based on a first document received from a server device, rendering a web page for display, wherein the rendered web page includes a set of selectable hyperlinks that are ordered based on a user preference of a user associated with the client device;

determining that a scroll position of the rendered web page has passed a first threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the rendered web page has passed the first threshold scroll position,

requesting and receiving a second document from the server device, wherein the second document is reachable by way of a first selectable hyperlink as ordered on the rendered web page;

re-rendering the web page for display, including combined content from both the first document and the second document;

after re-rendering the web page for display, determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed a second threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed the second threshold scroll position, further re-rendering the web page to eliminate content from one of the first document or the second document; and

removing a representation of the eliminated content from memory of the client device that is associated with the web browser.

6. The article of manufacture of claim 5 , wherein rendering the web page for display comprises constructing a document object model representation of the first document, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises modifying the document object model representation of the first document to also represent at least some of the second document.

7. The article of manufacture of claim 5 , wherein the second document follows the first document in the ordering defined by the user preference, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises re-rendering the web page to represent the first document followed by the second document.

8. A client device comprising:

at least one processor; and

data storage storing program instructions that upon execution by the at least one processor cause a web browser of the client device to perform operations including:

based on a first document received from a server device, rendering a web page for display, wherein the rendered web page includes a set of selectable hyperlinks that are ordered based on a user preference of a user associated with the client device;

determining that a scroll position of the rendered web page has passed a first threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the rendered web page has passed the first threshold scroll position;

requesting and receiving a second document from the server device, wherein the second document is reachable by way of a first selectable hyperlink as ordered on the rendered web page;

re-rendering the web page for display, including combined content from both the first document and the second document;

after re-rendering the web page for display, determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed a second threshold scroll position;

responsive to determining that the scroll position of the re-rendered web page has passed the second threshold scroll position, further re-rendering the web page to eliminate content from one of the first document or the second document; and

removing a representation of the eliminated content from memory of the client device that is associated with the web browser.

9. The client device of claim 8 , wherein rendering the web page for display comprises constructing a document object model representation of the first document, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises modifying the document object model representation of the first document to also represent at least some of the second document.

10. The client device of claim 8 , wherein the second document follows the first document in the ordering defined by the user preference, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display comprises re-rendering the web page to represent the first document followed by the second document.
