Abstract

A web page may be rendered for display on a client device. The rendered web page may be based on a first document. A first scroll position of the rendered web page may be determined. The first scroll position may be below the beginning of the first document. The web page may be re-rendered for display on the client device. The re-rendered web page may be based on a second document. A web-page navigation back command may be received. Possibly responsive to receiving the web-page navigation back command, the web page may be further re-rendered for display on the client device, and a scroll position of the further re-rendered web page may be adjusted to be at the beginning of the first document. The further re-rendered web page may be based on the first document.

Claims (52)

1. A method comprising:

rendering a web page for display on a client device, wherein the rendered web page is based on a first document;

displaying a first uniform resource locator (URL), wherein the first URL is an address that uniquely refers to the first document;

determining a scroll position of the rendered web page, wherein the scroll position is below the beginning of the first document;

re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, wherein the re-rendered web page contains the first document followed by a second document, wherein the scroll position is such that at least part of the second document is displayed on the client device;

replacing the first URL with a second URL, wherein the second URL is an address that uniquely refers to the second document;

receiving a web-page navigation back command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation back command, returning the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the first document, and replacing the second URL with the first URL.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the web page is displayed in a web browser, and wherein the web-page navigation back command is associated with moving in a backward direction in a browsing history of the web browser.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a web-page navigation forward command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation forward command, adjusting the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the second document.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the web page is displayed in a web browser, and wherein the web-page navigation forward command is associated with moving in a forward direction in a browsing history of the web browser.

The method of claim 1 , wherein rendering the web page for display on the client device comprises constructing a document object model representation of the first document, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display on the client device comprises modifying the document object model representation to represent the first document and the second document.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first document includes a plurality of selectable items corresponding to respective types of web page content, and wherein content from the second document is related to one of the selectable items.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the selectable items correspond to respective sections of an electronic version of a newspaper or a magazine.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein returning the scroll position of the re-rendered web page comprises adjusting the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to the beginning of the first document.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adding the first URL to a browsing history; and

after re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, adding the second URL to the browsing history, wherein the second URL follows the first URL in the browsing history.

10. An article of manufacture including a non-transitory computer-readable medium, having stored thereon program instructions that, upon execution by a client device, cause the client device to perform operations comprising:

rendering a web page for display on a client device, wherein the rendered web page is based on a first document;

displaying a first uniform resource locator (URL), wherein the first URL is an address that uniquely refers to the first document;

determining a scroll position of the rendered web page, wherein the scroll position is below the beginning of the first document;

re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, wherein the re-rendered web page contains the first document followed by a second document, wherein the scroll position is such that at least part of the second document is displayed on the client device;

replacing the first URL with a second URL, wherein the second URL is an address that uniquely refers to the second document;

receiving a web-page navigation back command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation back command, returning the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the first document, and replacing the second URL with the first URL.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 10 , wherein the web page is displayed in a web browser, and wherein the web-page navigation back command is associated with moving in a backward direction in a browsing history of the web browser.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 10 , the operations further comprising:

receiving a web-page navigation forward command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation forward command, adjusting the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the second document.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 12 , wherein the web page is displayed in a web browser, and wherein the web-page navigation forward command is associated with moving in a forward direction in a browsing history of the web browser.

14. The article of manufacture of claim 10 , wherein rendering the web page for display on the client device comprises constructing a document object model representation of the first document, and wherein re-rendering the web page for display on the client device comprises modifying the document object model representation to represent the first document and the second document.

15. The article of manufacture of claim 10 , wherein returning the scroll position of the re-rendered web page comprises adjusting the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to the beginning of the first document.

16. A client device comprising:

at least one processor;

data storage; and

program instructions, stored in the data storage, that upon execution by the at least one processor cause the client device to perform operations including:

rendering a web page for display on a client device, wherein the rendered web page is based on a first document;

displaying a first uniform resource locator (URL), wherein the first URL is an address that uniquely refers to the first document;

determining a scroll position of the rendered web page, wherein the scroll position is below the beginning of the first document;

re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, wherein the re-rendered web page contains the first document followed by a second document, wherein the scroll position is such that at least part of the second document is displayed on the client device;

replacing the first URL with a second URL, wherein the second URL is an address that uniquely refers to the second document;

receiving a web-page navigation back command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation back command, returning the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the first document, and replacing the second URL with the first URL.

17. The client device of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

adding the first URL to a browsing history; and

after re-rendering the web page for display on the client device, adding the second URL to the browsing history, wherein the second URL follows the first URL in the browsing history.

18. The client device of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

receiving a web-page navigation forward command; and

responsive to receiving the web-page navigation forward command, adjusting the scroll position of the re-rendered web page to be at the beginning of the second document.
