Abstract

Portable multi-purpose audience measurement systems, apparatus and methods are disclosed. Example methods disclosed herein include executing media metering software downloaded onto a portable device. Such example methods also include halting execution of the media metering software in response to determining that the portable device is being used for a native purpose. Such example methods further include, in response to determining that the portable device is not being used for a native purpose, continuing execution of the media metering software to monitor a media signal output by a media presentation device separate from the portable device.

Claims (37)

1. A method for media metering by a portable device, the method comprising:

executing, with a processor of the portable device, media metering software downloaded onto the portable device;

halting execution of the media metering software in response to determining that the portable device is being used for a native purpose;

in response to determining that the portable device is not being used for a native purpose, continuing execution of the media metering software to monitor a media signal output by a media presentation device separate from the portable device;

after continuing execution of the media metering software, determining whether an amount of power available for powering the device is sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software; and

in response to determining that the amount of power available for powering the device is not sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software, causing execution of the media metering software to sleep for a first interval of time.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the portable device includes at least one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant or a pager.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein continuing the execution of the media metering software includes:

activating a high gain mode of a microphone of the portable device; and

processing an output of the microphone to monitor the media signal.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media signal includes an audio signal, and continuing the execution of the media metering software includes causing the portable device to monitor the audio signal by at least one of detecting an audio code included in the audio signal or determining an audio signature from the audio signal.

5. The method as defined in claim 4 , further including downloading the media metering software to the portable device by at least one of: (1) establishing a wireless connection between the portable device and a server that is to provide the media metering software to the portable device, (2) establishing an Internet connection between the portable device and the server, or (3) establishing a connection between the portable device and the server that conforms to an extensible data transport protocol.

6. The method as defined in claim 5 , wherein the downloading of the media metering software to the portable device further includes at least one of pushing or pulling the metering software to the portable device.

7. A storage device or storage disk comprising machine readable instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to at least:

execute media metering software downloaded onto a portable device;

halt execution of the media metering software in response to determining that the portable device is being used for a native purpose;

in response to determining that the portable device is not being used for a native purpose, continue execution of the media metering software to monitor a media signal output by a media presentation device separate from the portable device;

after execution of the media metering software is continued, determine whether an amount of power available for powering the device is sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software; and

in response to a determination that the amount of power available for powering the device is not sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software, cause execution of the media metering software to sleep for a first interval of time.

8. The storage device or storage disk as defined in claim 7 , wherein after execution of the media metering software is continued, the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

activate a high gain mode of a microphone of the portable device; and

process an output of the microphone to monitor the media signal.

9. The storage device or storage disk as defined in claim 7 , wherein the media signal includes an audio signal, and after execution of the media metering software is continued, the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to monitor the audio signal by at least one of detecting an audio code included in the audio signal or determining an audio signature from the audio signal.

10. The storage device or storage disk as defined in claim 7 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to download the media metering software to the portable device by at least one of: (1) establishing a wireless connection between the portable device and a server that is to provide the media metering software to the portable device, (2) establishing an Internet connection between the portable device and the server, or (3) establishing a connection between the portable device and the server that conforms to an extensible data transport protocol.

11. A portable device comprising:

memory to store media metering software downloaded onto the portable device; and

a processor to:

execute the media metering software downloaded onto the portable device;

halt execution of the media metering software in response to determining that the portable device is being used for a native purpose;

in response to determining that the portable device is not being used for a native purpose, continue execution of the media metering software to monitor a media signal output by a media presentation device separate from the portable device;

after execution of the media metering software is continued, determine whether an amount of power available for powering the device is sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software; and

in response to a determination that the amount of power available for powering the device is not sufficient to continue execution of the media metering software, cause execution of the media metering software to sleep for a first interval of time.

12. The portable device as defined in claim 11 , wherein after execution of the media metering software is continued, the processor is further to:

activate a high gain mode of a microphone of the portable device; and

process an output of the microphone to monitor the media signal.

13. The portable device as defined in claim 11 , wherein the media signal includes an audio signal, and after execution of the media metering software is continued, the processor is further to monitor the audio signal by at least one of detecting an audio code included in the audio signal or determining an audio signature from the audio signal.

14. The portable device as defined in claim 11 , wherein the processor to further to download the media metering software to the portable device by at least one of: (1) establishing a wireless connection between the portable device and a server that is to provide the media metering software to the portable device, (2) establishing an Internet connection between the portable device and the server, or (3) establishing a connection between the portable device and the server that conforms to an extensible data transport protocol.
