DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR AUDIENCE MEASUREMENT
Digital rights management systems and methods for audience measurement are disclosed. Example methods disclosed herein include enabling a media handler implemented by a media device to begin presenting first media based on a first digital license associated with the first media. Such example methods also include retrieving a second digital license different from the first digital license from a license server separate from the media device. Such example methods further include causing the media handler to perform a first media monitoring operation based on the second digital license, the first media monitoring operation being deactivated by default.
1 . A media monitoring method comprising:
enabling, with a processor, a media handler implemented by a media device to begin presenting first media based on a first digital license associated with the first media;
retrieving, with the processor, a second digital license different from the first digital license from a license server separate from the media device; and
causing, with the processor, the media handler to perform a first media monitoring operation based on the second digital license, the first media monitoring operation being deactivated by default.
2 . A method as defined by claim 1 , wherein the second digital license specifies a term governing use of information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
3 . A method as defined by claim 2 , wherein the information comprises identification data embedded in the first media.
4 . A method as defined by claim 2 , wherein the term at least one of permits or restricts use of the information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
5 . A method as defined by claim 1 , further comprising deactivating the first media monitoring operation in response to determining that the second digital license has been revoked.
6 . A method as defined by claim 5 , further comprising revoking the second digital license in response to determining that the second digital license has expired.
7 . A method as defined by claim 1 , wherein processing of the second digital license is performed by a digital rights manager that is to process the first digital license.
8 . A method as defined by claim 1 , wherein retrieving the second digital license is triggered in response to at least one of activation of the media handler, selection of the first media for presentation by the media handler, the presenting of the first media by the media handler.
9 . A machine readable storage device or storage disk comprising machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause a processor to at least:
enable a media handler implemented by a media device to begin presenting first media based on a first digital license associated with the first media;
retrieve a second digital license different from the first digital license from a license server separate from the media device; and
cause the media handler to perform a first media monitoring operation based on the second digital license, the first media monitoring operation being deactivated by default.
10 . A storage device or storage disk as defined by claim 9 , wherein the second digital license specifies a term governing use of information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
11 . A storage device or storage disk as defined by claim 10 , wherein the information comprises identification data embedded in the first media.
12 . A storage device or storage disk as defined by claim 10 , wherein the term at least one of permits or restricts use of the information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
13 . A storage device or storage disk as defined by claim 9 , further comprising deactivating the first media monitoring operation in response to determining that the second digital license has been revoked.
14 . A storage device or storage disk as defined by claim 13 , further comprising revoking the second digital license in response to determining that the second digital license has expired.
15 . A media processing apparatus comprising:
a digital rights manager to enable a media handler to present first media based on a first digital license associated with the first media;
a retriever to retrieve a second digital license different from the first digital license from a license server separate from the media processing apparatus; and
a measurement activator to determine whether to activate a first media monitoring operation to be performed by the media handler based on the second digital license, the first media monitoring operation being deactivated by default.
16 . An apparatus as defined by claim 15 , wherein the second digital license specifies a term governing use of information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
17 . An apparatus as defined by claim 16 , wherein the information comprises identification data embedded in the first media.
18 . An apparatus as defined by claim 16 , wherein the term at least one of permits or restricts use of the information collected by the first media monitoring operation.
19 . An apparatus as defined by claim 15 , further comprising a revoker to determine that the second digital license has been revoked, wherein the first media monitoring operation is to be deactivated in response to the revoker determining that the second digital license has been revoked.
20 . An apparatus as defined by claim 19 , wherein the revoker is to revoke the second digital license in response to determining that the second digital license has expired.
