Abstract

An electrically identifiable medical electrode lead. The lead includes a flexible lead body having a distal end and a connector end. The lead also includes a plurality of electrodes disposed near the distal end of the flexible lead body. The lead further includes a connector disposed at the connector end of the flexible lead body, the connector including a plurality of contacts. The lead additionally includes a plurality of conductors supported by and passing through the flexible lead body, the plurality of conductors including electrical conductors that provide paths for electrical current from the connector to the plurality of electrodes. Finally, the lead includes a memory circuit supported by the flexible lead body and being in electrical communication with a contact of the plurality of contacts in the connector.

Claims (31)

1. A method of electrically identifying an implantable medical electrode lead, the method comprising:

powering, via an electrical stimulator, at least two contacts that are in electrical communication with a memory circuit of an implantable medical electrode lead coupled to the electrical stimulator, wherein the electrical stimulator and the implantable medical electrode lead are both implanted inside a body of a patient, and wherein the powering comprises electrically stimulating the at least two contacts to generate a voltage difference between the at least two contacts; and

reading an identification code from the memory circuit in response to powering the at least two contacts, thereby identifying a type of the implantable medical electrode lead.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implantable medical electrode lead further comprises a power converter in an electrical circuit with the memory circuit and wherein powering the at least two contacts that are in electrical communication with the memory circuit further comprises powering the at least two contacts that are in electrical communication with the memory circuit to increase a voltage in the power converter.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein reading the identification code from the memory circuit in response to powering the at least two contacts comprises reading the identification code from the memory circuit using load modulation.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining at least one of a body location and an electrode orientation for the lead.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implantable medical electrode lead includes an elongate connector that is configured to be connected to the electrical generator, and wherein the memory circuit is embedded within the elongate connector.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the implantable medical electrode lead further includes a plurality of contacts that are located on the elongate connector, the plurality of contacts including the at least two contacts, wherein each of the contacts circumferentially surrounds the elongate connector.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the memory circuit is disposed between the at least two contacts.

8. An electrically identifiable medical lead extension, comprising:

a flexible extension body having a proximal end and a distal end;

a proximal connector disposed at the proximal end of the flexible extension body, the proximal connector comprising a plurality of contacts;

a distal connector disposed at the distal end of the flexible extension body;

a plurality of conductors supported by and passing through the flexible extension body, the plurality of conductors including electrical conductors that provide paths for electrical current from the proximal connector to the distal connector; and

a memory circuit supported by the flexible extension body and being in electrical communication with at least two of the contacts of the plurality of contacts, wherein the memory circuit is embedded in the flexible extension body and located in between the at least two of the contacts.

9. The electrically identifiable medical lead extension of claim 8 , further comprising a filter and a power converter in an electrical circuit with the memory circuit.

10. The electrically identifiable medical lead extension of claim 9 , further comprising a communications module in an electrical circuit with the memory circuit.

11. The electrically identifiable medical lead extension of claim 8 , wherein the memory circuit stores an identification code.

12. The electrically identifiable medical lead extension of claim 8 , wherein the memory circuit is hermetically sealed within the flexible extension body.

13. The electrically identifiable medical lead extension of claim 8 , wherein the memory circuit is sealed in glass within the flexible extension body.

14. A medical system, comprising:

an implantable medical electrode lead implanted inside a body of a patient, wherein the implantable medical electrode lead includes at least two contacts and a memory circuit that is in electrical communication with the at least two contacts; and

an electrical stimulator implanted inside the body of the patient, the electrical stimulator being electrically coupled to the implantable medical electrode lead to deliver electrical stimulation to the patient, wherein the electrical stimulator is configured to:

power the at least two contacts by electrically stimulating the at least two contacts to generate a voltage difference between the at least two contacts; and

read an identification code from the memory circuit in response to the at least two contacts being powered, thereby identifying a type of the implantable medical electrode lead.

15. The medical system of claim 14 , wherein the implantable medical electrode lead further comprises a power converter in an electrical circuit with the memory circuit, and wherein the electrical stimulator is configured to power the at least two contacts that are in electrical communication with the memory circuit to increase a voltage in the power converter.

16. The medical system of claim 14 , wherein the electrical stimulator is configured to read the identification code from the memory circuit using load modulation.
