End cap and connector for a spinal implant
The present invention is a spinal implant that can be inserted into a surgically created cavity of one or more regions of the mammalian spine. Among other things, the biocompatible implant and end cap or biocompatible implant, connector and end cap combinations can assist with the restoration of the normal anatomic spinal alignment and spinal stability.
1. A combination inserted about a surgically created cavity proximate to one or more vertebrae; said combination comprising:
a) a biocompatible cage comprising:
i) a length having a longitudinal axis;
ii) a first end perimeter comprising an opening; and
iii) a plurality of spikes extending outwardly from said first end perimeter in a lengthwise direction parallel said longitudinal axis;
b) an end cap comprising:
i) a border comprising a plurality of bores;
ii) a plate extending in said lengthwise direction away from said border and comprising at least one opening receiving a fastener; and
iii) a pair of opposed docking slides extending from said border in said lengthwise direction toward said biocompatible cage; and
c) a connector adapted for positioning between said biocompatible cage and said end cap, wherein said connector is further adapted to receive said docking slides; said connector comprising:
i) a first leg comprising: a plurality of apertures adapted to receive some of said plurality of spikes; and a plurality of pins adapted to engage some of said plurality of bores;
ii) a second leg comprising: a plurality of apertures adapted to receive some of said plurality of spikes; and a plurality of pins adapted to engage some of said plurality of bores; and
iii) an anterior section anterior to said plate and joining a first end of said first leg and a first end of said second leg, wherein said anterior section shares a margin with said legs facing said biocompatible cage and comprises an opposing margin extending further away from said biocompatible cage than said pins; and wherein said docking slides engage interior sides of said first and said second legs.
2. The combination of claim 1 , wherein said anterior section inhibits said fastener from backing out of said plate.
3. The combination of claim 2 , wherein said border comprises four sides.
4. The combination of claim 3 , wherein said biocompatible cage comprises one or more lateral brakes.
5. The combination of claim 3 , wherein said anterior section comprises a hole.
6. The combination of claim 3 , wherein said first leg and said second leg are parallel.
7. The combination of claim 3 , wherein said first end's aperture is trapezoidal.
8. The combination of claim 7 , wherein said first leg and said second leg converge toward each other as said first leg and said second leg advance away from said anterior section.
9. A connector adapted to join a first spinal implant and a second spinal device distal from said first spinal implant; wherein said first spinal implant comprises a centralized aperture at a lengthwise edge of said first spinal implant and spikes extending in a lengthwise direction from and beyond said lengthwise edge; and wherein said connector is adapted to join simultaneously with said first spinal implant and said second spinal device; said connector comprising:
a) a first leg comprising:
i) a plurality of pins positioned on a first side, wherein said pins extend away from said first spinal implant in a direction parallel a longitudinal axis of said first spinal implant and are adapted to fit with some of a plurality of bores of said second spinal device; and
ii) a second side opposite said first side comprising a plurality of apertures adapted to engage some of said spikes;
b) a second leg comprising:
i) a plurality of pins positioned on a first side, wherein said pins extend away from said first spinal implant in a direction parallel said longitudinal axis of said first spinal implant and are adapted to fit with some of a plurality of bores of said second spinal device; and
ii) a second side opposite said first side comprising a plurality of apertures adapted to engage some of said spikes; and
c) an anterior section joining a first end of said first leg and a first end of said second leg, wherein said anterior section inhibits one or more fasteners from backing out of said second spinal device distal from said first spinal implant, and wherein said connector is positioned between said first spinal implant and said second spinal device.
10. The connector of claim 9 , wherein said anterior section shares a first margin with said legs facing said first spinal implant and comprises an opposing second margin extending further away from said first spinal implant than said pins.
11. The connector of claim 10 , wherein said second spinal device comprises opposed slides engaging inward sides of said first and said second legs.
12. The connector of claim 11 , wherein said first leg and said second leg are parallel.
13. The connector of claim 11 , wherein said first leg and said second leg converge toward each other as said first leg and said second leg advance away from said anterior section.
