Abstract

Embodiments include a system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient. The system may include at least one computer system configured to receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient's heart, and create a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient's heart based on the patient-specific data. The at least one computer system may be further configured to create a physics-based model relating to a blood flow characteristic of the patient's heart and determine a fractional flow reserve within the patient's heart based on the three-dimensional model and the physics-based model.

Claims (56)

1. A system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient, the system comprising:

at least one computer system configured to:

receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a patient's coronary arteries;

create a three-dimensional model of at least an area of interest within the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the received patient-specific data;

generate a reduced-order model of a second area of the portion of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to the area of interest and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest;

solve equations of blood flow through the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the three-dimensional model and the reduced-order model; and

calculate a value of a blood flow characteristic within at least the area of interest using one or more solutions to the equations of blood flow.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reduced-order model is one of a one-dimensional model or a lump-parameter model.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood flow characteristic is one of

blood pressure, blood velocity, blood flow rate, and fractional flow reserve within at least the portion of the anatomic structure.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reduced-order model is generated using the received patient specific data.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the patient-specific data used to generate the reduced-order model includes one or more of an aortic pressure, the patient's systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or the patient's cardiac output.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the area of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest is downstream of the area of interest.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to adjust parameters of the reduced-order model based on the patient-specific data.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to modify the three-dimensional model based on input received from a user, the input including a selection of a plan of treatment for the patient.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the selected plan of treatment is associated with a change in the geometry of the anatomical structure of the patient; and

the at least one computer system is further configured to modify the three-dimensional model based on the selected plan of treatment.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to:

determine the blood flow characteristic at additional locations within the patient's arteries.

11. A computer-implemented method for determining patient-specific cardiovascular information using at least one computer system, the method comprising:

receiving, using at least one processor, patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a patient's coronary arteries;

creating, using the at least one processor, a three-dimensional model of at least an area of interest within the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the received patient-specific data;

generating, using the at least one processor, a reduced-order model of a second area of the portion of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to the area of interest and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest;

solving, using the at least one processor, equations of blood flow through the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the three-dimensional model and the reduced-order model; and

calculating, using the at least one processor, a value of a blood flow characteristic within at least the area of interest using one or more solutions to the equations of blood flow.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the reduced-order model is one of a one-dimensional model or a lump-parameter model.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the blood flow characteristic is one of

blood pressure, blood velocity, blood flow rate, and fractional flow reserve within at least the portion of the anatomic structure.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the reduced-order model is generated using the received patient specific data.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the patient-specific data used for generating the reduced-order model includes one or more of an aortic pressure, the patient's systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or the patient's cardiac output.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the area of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest is downstream of the area of interest.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising adjusting parameters of the reduced-order model based on the patient-specific data.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising modifying the three-dimensional model based on input received from a user, the input including a selection of a plan of treatment for the patient.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the selected plan of treatment is associated with a change in the geometry of the anatomical structure of the patient; and

the method further comprises modifying the three-dimensional model based on the selected plan of treatment.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining the blood flow characteristic at additional locations within the patient's arteries.

21. A non-transitory computer readable medium for use on at least one computer system containing computer-executable programming instructions for performing a method for determining patient-specific cardiovascular information, the method comprising:

receiving patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a patient's coronary arteries;

creating a three-dimensional model of at least an area of interest within the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the received patient-specific data;

generating a reduced-order model of a second area of the portion of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to the area of interest and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest;

solving equations of blood flow through the portion of the patient's coronary arteries using the three-dimensional model and the reduced-order model; and

calculating a value of a blood flow characteristic within at least the area of interest using one or more solutions to the equations of blood flow.

22. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the reduced-order model is one of a one-dimensional model or a lump-parameter model.

23. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the blood flow characteristic is one of blood pressure, blood velocity, blood flow rate, and fractional flow reserve within at least the portion of the anatomic structure.

24. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the reduced-order model is generated using the received patient specific data.

25. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 24 , wherein the patient-specific data used for generating the reduced-order model includes one or more of an aortic pressure, the patient's systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or the patient's cardiac output.

26. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the area of the patient's coronary arteries that is adjacent to and coupled to the three-dimensional model of at least the area of interest is downstream of the area of interest.

27. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the method further comprises adjusting parameters of the reduced-order model based on the patient-specific data.

28. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the method further comprises modifying the three-dimensional model based on input received from a user, the input including a selection of a plan of treatment for the patient.

29. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein:

the selected plan of treatment is associated with a change in the geometry of the anatomical structure of the patient; and

the method further comprises modifying the three-dimensional model based on the selected plan of treatment.

30. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the method further comprises determining the blood flow characteristic at additional locations within the patient's arteries.
