Abstract

The present invention is a cargo inspection system, employing a radiation source, capable of scanning vehicles and/or cargo in a wide range of sizes, including conventional imaging areas as well as taller and bulkier enclosures at sufficiently optimal efficacy and overall throughput. In one embodiment, the present invention is a multiple pass inspection method for inspecting vehicles and their cargo, comprising a first pass scan, wherein said first pass scan includes moving a radiation source at a suitable scanning distance, rotating a radiation source at a suitable scanning angle, and moving said radiation source along an object under inspection.

Claims (25)

1. A method for scanning a first vehicle and a second vehicle using an inspection system comprising a radiation source and a detector array mounted on a gantry transport system, such that both the radiation source and the detector array can be moved in a vertical, horizontal or rotational direction, said method comprising:

vertically positioning the radiation source at a first angular position relative to the first vehicle;

horizontally moving the radiation source at the first angular position along a length of the first vehicle from a first position to a second position;

adjusting a position of the detector array, so that said detector array is in substantially continual alignment with the radiation source;

determining if a full height of the first vehicle has been sufficiently imaged;

if a full height of the first vehicle has been sufficiently imaged, keeping the radiation source at the second position and initiating a scan of the second vehicle; and

if a full height of the first vehicle has not been sufficiently imaged, positioning the radiation source at a second angular position relative to the vehicle and horizontally moving the radiation source at the second angular position along the length of the first vehicle from the second position to the first position.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is an X-ray source.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is a gamma source.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said radiation source is a linear accelerator.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising rotating the radiation source to obtain multiple views at different angles of the object under inspection.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the radiation source is rotated in a range of 0 to 90 degrees.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said detector array comprises solid-state crystal-diode detectors.

8. A method for scanning a first vehicle and a second vehicle using an inspection system comprising a radiation source and a detector array mounted on a gantry transport system, such that both the radiation source and the detector array can be moved in a vertical, horizontal, or rotational direction, said method comprising:

vertically positioning the radiation source at a plurality of different heights to determine an optimum angular position to entirely scan the object under inspection;

vertically positioning the radiation source at the first angular position relative to the first vehicle;

horizontally moving the radiation source at the first angular position along a length of the first vehicle from a first position to a second position;

determining if a full height of the first vehicle has been sufficiently imaged; and

if a full height of the first vehicle has not been sufficiently imaged, positioning the radiation source at a second angular position relative to the vehicle and horizontally moving the radiation source at the second angular position along the length of the first vehicle from the second position to the first position.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said radiation source is an X-ray source.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said detector array comprises solid-state crystal-diode detectors.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein said radiation source is a gamma source.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein said radiation source is a linear accelerator.

13. The method of claim 8 further comprising rotating the radiation source to obtain multiple views at different angles of the object under inspection.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the radiation source is rotated in a range of 0 to 90 degrees.
