Abstract

A system, method, apparatus, and computer program product for validating a user modification to an elevation plan for a computing system are disclosed. A method may include causing display of a user interface including a representation of at least a portion of the elevation plan. The user interface may be configured to enable user modification of the elevation plan. The method may further include receiving an indication of a mount position for a component. The method may additionally include validating that the component is mountable in the mount position. The method may also include updating the elevation plan to include the component in the mount position in response to validation that the component is mountable in the mount position.

Claims (45)

1. A method for validating a user modification to an elevation plan for a computing system comprising a plurality of components that are rack mountable in respective mount positions of a rack, the method comprising:

causing, display of a user interface comprising at least a portion of a rack diagram that is a two-dimensional elevation of the computing system, and including the respective mount positions of the rack, according to the elevation plan, wherein the user interface is configured to enable user modification of the elevation plan for the computing system;

receiving an indication of a mount position of the respective mount positions for a component of the plurality of components, the indication being received via user selection of the mount position on the rack diagram in the user interface; and in response to receipt of the indication of the mount position,

validating, based on a component placement rule, that the component is mountable in the mount position; and

updating the elevation plan for the computing system to include the component mounted in the mount position in response to validation that the component is mountable in the mount position,

wherein at least one method operation is performed by processing circuitry.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing system is a converged infrastructure system, and the plurality of components of the computing system comprises one or more compute components, one or more storage components, and one or more network components.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the validating and the updating are performed in response to receiving the indication of the mount position for the component.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a command to save a modification to the elevation plan;

wherein the validating and the updating are performed in response to the command.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing display of an error indication in response to a determination that the component is not mountable in the mount position.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the mount position to be displayed as an open mount position within the elevation plan in response to a determination that the component is not mountable in the mount position.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein validating that the component is mountable in the mount position comprises validating, based at least in part on a dimension of the component, that a sufficient amount of rack space is available to accommodate the component in the mount position.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface further comprises a user interface element associated with the mount position and configured to provide access to a set of selectable components, and wherein receiving the indication of the mount position for the component comprises receiving an indication of a component selected from the list of selectable components.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an indication of a logical designation for the component;

verifying that the logical designation is a valid logical designation for the component; and

updating the elevation plan to include a reference to the logical designation in association with the component in an instance in response to verification that the logical designation is a valid logical designation for the component.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an indication that the elevation plan has been completed; and

in response to completion of the elevation plan, performing a final build validation check of the elevation plan to verify that the elevation plan complies with a set of one or more rules.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elevation plan comprises an automatically generated elevation plan generated based at least in part on a build specification and a set of component placement rules, and wherein the user interface is configured to enable user modification of the automatically generated elevation plan.

12. A computer program product for validating a user modification to an elevation plan for a computing system comprising a plurality of components that are rack mountable in respective mount positions of a rack, the computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having program instructions stored thereon, which when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform a method comprising:

causing display of a user interface comprising at least a portion of a rack diagram that is a two-dimensional elevation of the computing system, and including the respective mount positions of the rack, according to the elevation plan, wherein the user interface is configured to enable user modification of the elevation plan for the computing system;

receiving an indication of a mount position of the respective mount positions for a component of the plurality of components, the indication being received via user selection of the mount position on the rack diagram in the user interface; and in response to receipt of the indication of the mount position;

validating, based on a component placement rule, that the component is mountable in the mount position; and

updating the elevation plan for the computing system to include the component mounted in the mount position in response to validation that the component is mountable in the mount position.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the computing system is a converged infrastructure system comprising one or more compute components, one or more storage components, and one or more network components.

14. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises causing display of an error indication in response to a determination that the component is not mountable in the mount position.

15. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises causing the mount position to be displayed as an open mount position within the elevation plan in response to a determination that the component is not mountable in the mount position.

16. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein validating that the component is mountable in the mount position comprises validating, based at least in part on a dimension of the component, that a sufficient amount of rack space is available to accommodate the component in the mount position.

17. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises:

receiving an indication of a logical designation for the component;

verifying that the logical designation is a valid logical designation for the component; and

updating the elevation plan to include a reference to the logical designation in association with the component in response to verification that the logical designation is a valid logical designation for the component.

18. A system for validating a user modification to an elevation plan for a computing system comprising a plurality of components that are rack mountable in respective mount positions of a rack, the system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory storing computer program code, wherein the at least one memory and stored computer program code are configured, with the at least one processor, to cause the system to at least:

cause display of a user interface comprising at least a portion of a rack diagram that is a two-dimensional elevation of the computing system, and including the respective mount positions of rack, according to the elevation plan, wherein the user interface is configured to enable user modification of the elevation plan for the computing system;

receive an indication of a mount position of the respective mount positions for a component of the plurality of components, the indication being received via user selection of the mount position on the rack diagram in the user interface; and in response to receipt of the indication of the mount position;

validate, based on a component placement rule, that the component is mountable in the mount position; and

update the elevation plan for the computing system to include the component mounted in the mount position in response to validation that the component is mountable in the mount position.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the computing system is a converged infrastructure system comprising one or more compute components, one or more storage components, and one or more network components.

20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to cause the apparatus to validate that the component is mountable in the mount position at least in part by causing the apparatus to validate, based at least in part on a dimension of the component, that a sufficient amount of rack space is available to accommodate the component at the mount position.
